Potential World Series Rematches: 2017 (v2.0)

humzooBoth the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and National League Championship Series (NLCS) are underway. The Houston Astros seized an early 2-0 series lead over the New York Yankees in the ALCS. In the NLCS, the Los Angeles struck first by beating the Chicago Cubs during the opening game last night.

Whether or not baseball fans will enjoy a rematch of a World Series from yesteryear relies entirely on the fate of the Yankees. While the Bronx Bombers have dropped the first two games of the ALCS, in a best-of-seven format, the series is far from over. The next three games shift to Yankee Stadium. During the National League Division Series (NLDS), the Yankees trailed the Cleveland Indians 0-2 in a best-of-five format only rally and win the series 3-2.

Fans are guaranteed to see a unique World Series if the Astros eliminate the Yankees. And if the Astros win the National League pennant, they will be the first franchise to win pennants in both leagues (AL, 2005). Only the Milwaukee Brewers can match that milestone (AL, 1982). But, if the Yankees rally to claim the American League pennant, fans will revel in baseball nostalgia.

Here is the status of the two League Championship Series (best-of-seven):

ALCS: Houston Astros over New York Yankees, 2-0
NLCS: Los Angeles Dodgers over Chicago Cubs, 1-0
