Magic Number: 27

Last night, the Chicago Cubs feasted upon the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-3. The Milwaukee Brewers did not play, so the Magic Number only dropped to 27. I know it's still August, but over the next few days, teams will start to be eliminated from contention. The Washington Nationals most likely will be the first to schedule October golf outings. Their elimination number for the National League Wild Card is two, which means any combination of Brewers wins and Nationals losses will send them packing.

Starting tonight, the Brewers have a short two-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Though not a long series, this is a perfect opportunity for the Brewers to start pulling away with the National League Wild Card spot. If the Brewers stumble, and the Cubs continue to pound the Pirates, Chicago could inch closer to a division title.

Sadly, It is impossible for me to pull for the Cards.
So I'm hoping for a split.
My vote would be to turn back the clock and put the Brew Crew back in the AL.
I mean come on the Angels only have 4 teams in their division. They don't have the wins the Cubs do and their magic number is like 17.

It has been hard to talk magic numbers and such so far, but I am starting to see the end of the season closing in. It has been a fantastic year to be a Cubs fan. I remember how awesome it was last year when we clinched. Such an awesome night. Too bad it was the last good night of the season. Hopefully things will be different this year. Go Cubs!

The Cubs beat the Pirates again. Ugly game though. The Magic Number is down to 26. The Brewers are doing a number on the Cardinals tonight. This number is dropping slowly.

@Betsy: Sorry about the sweep this afternoon. The Cubs dropped the Magic Number to 25. The Brewers are winning, 3-0, in the sixth over St. Louis. They aren't making this easy for the Cubs.
