MLB 2022 Game #14: Marlins vs. CubsAs MLB's trading deadline I approached, I had a chance to catch a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Years ago, I decided not to get attached to specific players. But I was fairly certain that the Cubs would move Willson Contreras before the deadline. The Cubs' competitive window had closed and Contreras was one of the final pieces of the 2016 World Series team that remained. Ian Happ, who was called up in 2017, was also likely to get moved to a contender. Despite not getting attached to players, I was glad to catch those two players a final time in Cubs uniforms.
Then nothing significant happened at the deadline.
Fast forward to this afternoon. I'm back at Wrigley Field to catch two teams with losing records. Today, the Chicago Cubs (42-63, .400) will host the Miami Marlins (48-58, .453). Both teams sit in fourth place in their respective divisions. The Cubs sit 15.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals. The Marlins trail the front-running New York Mets by 19 games.
The Marlins will send 26-year-old Pablo Lopez (7-6, 3.41 ERA) to the mound. The Cubs will counter with Drew Smyly (3-6, 4.42 ERA).
