Winter Classic 2009

Today Wrigley Field will host the Winter Classic outdoor hockey game between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. From all reports, it appears that the weather will be perfect to transform the summer beer garden into an outdoor ice rink. Temperatures seem as if they will hang around the freezing point and the skies will remain overcast.

Over the last week, this game has received a lot of press. Yes, this will be the first time Chicago has hosted an outdoor game, but the game is also shaping up to mean something. The Blackhawks organization has been revived over the last two seasons and fans are starting to return to the United Center to watch games. The Blackhawks have also won nine straight games, until their loss to Detroit on Tuesday. Not only is this a New Year's Day event, but it's a battle for first place.

If you are bored with the Tournament of Roses Parade, and you aren't quite ready for college football bowl games, flip the channel to NBC at noon CST.

My husband just left for the game. We have a bit of a rivalry in our home as he is Blackhawks fan and I'm team Red Wings. At least one of us will be happy with the outcome!

Should be a good game today. A guy from work is going. I hope he brings his camera. I'd love to see some shots from inside the ballpark.

I made Charlie take my Elph...hopefully he'll use it (he's not much of a photographer!) If he does I'll post some pics later.

I am a penguins fan myself. That being said I like Chicago's squad more because they're quite similar to Pittsburgh's with thier younger lines and speedy forwards. That and the fact that Detroit happened to be the team that outplayed mine last year for the cup.

very dissapointing outcome but fun to watch a non baseball game at Wrigley. The Hawks have a really good young team and I'm very optimistic about their future.

I think the Cubs/Astros game we caught at the end of the 2008 season could be classified as non-baseball.
