Happy Opening Day Eve 2009The 2009 Major League Baseball season starts tomorrow night when the defending World Champion Philadelphia Phillies play the Atlanta Braves in Philadelphia. At least this season the opening game starts within the United States. I won't have to wake up at 4 a.m. to watch someone like the Oakland Athletics play the Boston Red Sox in the Tokyo Dome. Sleep patterns will remain normal.
On Monday night, the Chicago Cubs will defend their National League Central Division title (two years in a row, still can't believe that) against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. Carlos Zambrano will battle Roy Oswalt.
The defending American League Central Champion Chicago White Sox open at home this year. They will not only battle the Kansas City Royals on Monday afternoon, they will have to deal with the elements. Right now, local weather outlets are calling for rain and snow.
The defending National League Wild Card Milwaukee Brewers wait until Tuesday to start their season. They open their season on the west coast against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.
On a Fantasy Baseball note...
A few fellow Humzooers are participating in my free, bragging rights only league this year. The league is named, "A Century of Waiting...Plus 1" in honor of my Cubs. Best of luck to everyone, but I hope I win.
On a Wiffle Ball note...
In an earlier blog, I mentioned that 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of my old Wiffle Ball League. I have tallied the stats, crunched the numbers, and prepared the play-by-play and box scores. Every game from that season will be commemorated on Humzoo. The first two official games were played on Thursday, May 18, 1989 (Craig McBeath vs. Bill Pearch). Mark you calendar for Monday, May 18 for the start of the retrospective. I promise it will be as exciting as Ken Burns' Baseball.
