MLB Game #12: Cardinals vs. BrewersToday, Susan and I are headed to Milwaukee's Miller Park for the final time in 2009. It's somewhat fitting that we are seeing the Milwaukee Brewers play the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals played the role of the spoiler for the National League Central Division. Most experts predicted the Chicago Cubs would easily win the division, by 10 games, for a third consecutive season. Nobody was certain who would give the Cubs a run for their money, but many claimed the Brewers might have a shot at winning the NL wild card again in 2009. The Cardinals never faded this season, and in fact, caught fire during August. At the same time, the Cubs and Brewers faltered.
The probable starting pitchers are Chris Carpenter (15-3, 2.28 ERA) and Dave Bush (3-6, 6.47 ERA). If the Cardinals win today (or a Pirates loss to the Cubs), the Pittsburgh Pirates will be eliminated from the NL Central race. The Cardinals have an 11 1/2 game lead over the Cubs, and a 14 game lead over the Brewers.
