Ferris Bueller at the Cubs Game

On Twitter this morning, I read a tweet about a random stat that I'm certain nobody here is interested in (fewest singles in a career for players with a minimum of 3,000 plate appearances), but it brought me to an interesting link. I assume almost everyone who reads this blog has seen, or is at least aware of, Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

When Ferris and his friends enjoy their day away from school, one of the stops they make is a trip to Wrigley Field. The game they attend is between the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. If you recall, Ferris catches a foul ball. I've always been curious which game they supposedly attended. Even though the movie doesn't feature many shots of the game itself, it does show a few live shots at Wrigley Field and quick shots of the television broadcast. The live shots do not offer any clues, but the TV broadcast does. We get a few glimpses of players and the situation in the game. Harry Caray even sets up enough of the game to offer valuable clues.

And the answer is: June 5, 1985.

Here's the box score: Atlanta Braves defeat Chicago Cubs.

For more details, this article on Baseball Prospectus provides more information.

WGN-TV also has video to support this.

I love that you figured this out!
