A Ball from Eddie Perez

On Tuesday night, I traveled with fellow Humzooer, ozthegreat (who's been noticeably absent online lately) to Milwaukee to catch the Brewers/Braves game at Miller Park. Susan had a mid-term and couldn't go. For the first five innings, we stayed in our seats and watched as the game breezed along. There was a solid pitching matchup between Yovani Gallardo and Derek Lowe.

During the top of the sixth, we decided to get up and move around. Miller Park has a concourse that gives access to the entire park. We eventually made our way behind the visiting team's bullpen in right field. We heard the sound of warm-up pitches - baseballs hitting leather - being thrown. We moved as close as we could to the edge of the railing to look in. Earlier, before the game started, we were glancing through the game guide. We noticed a few names of ballplayers that made up the Braves coaching staff. When we looked into the bullpen, ozthegreat asked me if the bullpen coach was Eddie Perez. Sure enough he was.

Back in college, despite being a Cubs fan, ozthegreat followed the Braves closely. They had a great team back then, especially their pitching staff. Eddie Perez was the backup catcher and served as Greg Maddux's personal catcher in the mid-to-late 1990s. Ozthegreat leans over the edge to grab a photo of Perez. Eddie turned and spotted him. He smiled and gave him a thumbs-up. He also reached into a bag and tossed a baseball his way.

Very cool.

If you're curious, here's Eddie Perez's career stats.
