The Postseason Starts to Take Shape

Last night, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-1 to clinch the American League Central Division title. This is the team's first division title since they won the American League East in 1987. The Tigers are the first AL team to secure a spot in the 2011 postseason.

In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies are guaranteed a spot in the postseason, but they have not clinched the NL East yet. If the Atlanta Braves lose to the New York Mets this afternoon, the Phillies would win the division. If not, the Phillies need a win over the St. Louis Cardinals this evening.

As of the start of games tonight, here are the current Magic Numbers:

National League

Central: Milwaukee Brewers - 7
East: Philadelphia Phillies - 1
West: Arizona Diamondbacks - 6
Wild Card: Atlanta Braves - 9

American League

Central: Detroit Tigers - Clinched
East: New York Yankees - 10
West: Texas Rangers - 9
Wild Card: Boston Red Sox - 9
