The best Cubs team since....

With the Cubs' victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, the Chicago Cubs claimed the best record in the Major Leagues. I've always been hesitant to jump to conclusions with this team since the National League is weaker than the American League right now. Even though they don't have a commanding lead over the St. Louis Cardinals or Houston Astros, the Cubs are pulling out victories left and right.

Cubs fans, is this team the best since 1984, or another year?

1) I'm not a Cubs fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Those darned boys in blue are doing really well, but I have to wonder how long it'll last. Not to be Debbie Downer, but they usually seem to muck things up pretty well later in the season.

2) Yeah, that's why I'm hesitant to say anything this earlier. With the Cubs and White Sox in first place at the end of May, we're in store for a good season. The 1985 Cubs suffered a number of key injuries around the All-Star Game. They had a great follow-up to 1984. I just hope we're not in for the same thing this time.

3) I would go so far as to say this team, right now, is better than the '84 team. They are head and shoulders better offensively with nearly everyone in the starting lineup hitting near .300. Defensively the two are about equal save for the awful showing in left by Soriano. That questionable home run last weekend in Pittsburgh should have been caught but Soriano is allergic to the wall. Sandberg is by far better than anyone the Cubs put out there this year (Fontenot, DeRosa, Cedeno) but everywhere else this years team is better. That said, it's still early and the Cubs could still spit the bit as they do almost every year. We'll see.

4) Kerry Wood vs. Lee Smith? I'd give the nod to Smith. Of course, he gave up the homer to Garvey in the NLCS.

5) That's one of the differences, but Zambrano and Sutcliffe sort of cancel each other out, and Eckersley was better than Lilly. Other than that the pitching staffs are basically even.

6) Yeah, and Eck was drunk most of the time, too. Scary to think that Zambrano and Sutcliffe cancel each other out. Sut was 16-1 after the trade with the Cleveland Indians.

How the game today? Hell of a comeback.
