Spring Training During the 1970s

On Saturday, the Chicago Cubs pitchers and catchers reported to Mesa, Arizona to open spring training for 2012. The position players will follow shortly. Despite real games not starting for a while, it makes summer seem that much closer. Our outstanding weather this past weekend helped, too. Temperatures hit the low 50s. This afternoon, I didn't even need a jacket.

This morning, I finished reading a book about Pixar and decided it was time to sneak in another baseball book. I started reading Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s. Today, the Chicago Tribune's website featured a video of vintage Cubs spring training footage. What a pleasant coincidence. The footage picks up after the wreckage of the 1969 collapse and the New York Mets winning the World Series. There's a quick clip of Cubs legend Ernie Banks singing, and concludes with the hiring of Herman Franks.

We're almost there.
