Humzoo Video Sneak Peek

We are more excited than ever about the upcoming launch of Humzoo Video. So excited in fact, that we couldn't wait until July to share it with everyone. In our spare time we put together a fun little video to promote the new feature.

Feedback
A lot of effort has gone into the making of Humzoo Video. We've spent countless hours using and testing the new video player and we feel like it's totally solid. However, we need your help too. We want to know what you think of the video player, how easy it is to use. We also want to know what you think of the overall load time and quality of the video. The size and quality of the video you see above represents what we plan to offer when Humzoo Video launches in July.

Making of the Video
For in-depth details on how this video came about check out Dave's latest blog - Humzoo FMU - Making the Video.

Spread the Word
We need your help spreading the word about the upcoming launch of Humzoo Video. Tell your family and friends about it, pass along a link to this blog. Download the iPod/iPhone version and show it to your friends. We want everyone to know about Humzoo Video when we launch it the first week in July.

1) Not sure how long it is supposed to take to start the video but all I get is a black screen and no movement on the progression line. I'm at work using a T3 line so I feel it isn't my connection. Should there be something downloaded to make it work? Since it is a work computer that may be the problem--they run pretty lean. Can't wait to get my MAC to really appreciate the videos. Always been a weak area with the work laptops and PCs. :)

6) Make sure you have the latest Flash player installed. You can get that here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1...

We do need to put something in place that lets you know if your player is too old and you need to upgrade. Mental note recorded.

7) Ok. Did that. I now get the video but it only works if I move the progression bar myself. Like old-time projectors where you had to crank it. :) Aren't you glad I'm messing things up for you? :)

8) That was awesome!! I was still confused by Denny...at several points I wondered when/how Shoo got in the video.

You guys did a great job!!

p.s. Two thumbs up for Rick Astley.

9) The video looked great, but playback was a little jerky for me. Not sure whether it's something on my end or not.

10) Ok. Now it is working (awesome video--even without sound!). I couldn't get over the detail of seeing Denny breathing during his park-bench nap! It still was a little funky for me. I had to hit the pause and go several times before it kicked in. Maybe it just took that long for the FLASH player to get settled and start working better. :)

11) Linda, it is an IE7 issue. Once you start the video, click on the sound icon and the sound will start playing.

12) I have usually always used my mom's computer as a benchmark. If it works for her, it will work for everyone. I did have to update the flash player on her computer, but the video loads and works fine. It's an older iMac (the lamp-looking one). I've tested in IE a couple times, and the videos worked as they should have.

The movie above is in a special player though, designed to show only this one movie. It's possible that some details about how we embedded it here are causing some glitches - not sure yet. If the playback is choppy, it is likely due to lack of memory/processing power on your computer or browser.

Possibly Humdingers should be given brand new computers. I'll talk to Denny about this...

13) Most awesome thing I've seen today. Now George needs to post his behind the scenes footage - which he can be seen filming in the scene where Dave first enters Dane's and runs past Sally. :)

Good stuff, D&D...can't wait to Digg it when it goes live.

14) Please make them MACs, Dave. :) I do have IE7 on the work PC and probably was the culprit. I didn't see any problems except for one slight drag on a part with Denny in it. (must be that energetic part of his video!). :) Other than that once it started working it was smooth as Dylan's skin. :)

15) I am able to reproduce the bug in IE 7 only so that helps out. We'll troubleshoot it and get it fixed before we go live in July. Hopefully that is the only one, sounds like everyone else had a good experience.

16) I'm totally down with sacrificing my computer for a new one to the benefit of Humzoo. Just in case it matters, I've got a G4 titanium pb with 1GB of RAM. I'm using Safari 3.1.1. the choppiness was minor, but noticeable.

21) Ironically Dave and I both have a Canon HV-20. We bought them around the same time. The quality is awesome and its a consumer-grade camera so you don't pay out the nose. Videos look great on our HD TV.

Since I bought the camera they have released a newer model (HV-30) which has a few more features but nothing major. The camera shoots in HD but Humzoo Video is not high-def so its not really even relevant to the quality. I am really happy with how it all turned out though.

22) Browser test results from my office...
Vista/Firefox 2.0.0.14 -- Works
XP/Firefox 2.0.0.14 -- Works
XP/IE 6 -- Works
Mac OS X/Firefox -- Works
Mac OS X/Safari -- A little jittery, but works.
Vista/IE 7.0.6000.16681 -- No worky (scrubber scrubs, but no sound or vid)

26) Thanks for testing that out Russ. I think the IE problem is something we can look into. That problem is most likely tied to the code we use for our embedded player and will not be an issue on the player that lives on our site. The player we used in this blog is more like our embedded player.

I can confirm that Ethan has memorized lines from the movie. I showed it to him about 10 times in my office the other day, and he loves it. He really likes that "Denny Deaton" guy. They get to meet each other finally in a couple weeks when we see Denny on the way back from our beach vacation.

27) I did some research and found out that this is a known issue in earlier version of Internet Explorer 7. Microsoft basically made a mistake. They added a requirement for users to click on the Flash object first before they could actually use it. Silly Microsoft.

There are a few options available:
1) Microsoft has fixed the issue (April 08), so just upgrade/update Internet Explorer 7 to the latest version. This is by far the best method. You can download the latest version from their web site here or run system update on Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow....

2) You can configure your browser to allow ActiveX objects to run automatically. This could potentially allow an unwanted ActiveX control to run on to your machine so be careful with this one. But here is how to configure it.

a) With Internet Explorer 7 open, click the Tools menu at the top right corner of the browser. In the drop down menu click Internet Options.

b) Click the Advanced tab at the top right. Scroll down until you see "Allow Active Content to Play in files on my Computer".

c) Put a check mark next to that item and click "Apply" at the bottom. In most cases this will require a system reboot.

34) Thanks Soundchick. I posted a solution a little bit ago. Unfortunately this is out of our control and in the users hands. You can simply upgrade Internet Explorer 7 and it will fix the issue.

36) Hi Ben,
What problem did you have? Are you able to see the player or the video at all? If not, do you have Flash installed? If so, have you tried the Internet Explorer 7 update I mentioned above? We need you to see this video and want to help, that's all. Thanks.

It was a flash issue. Installed flash on my computer and I'm good to go!

44) Time to answer some questions, you guys have been busy.

Scott, the game was Street Fighter II. I am actually not a big gamer but thought it would be fun for the video. I downloaded MacMAME for my Mac and Dave found a bunch of games for it (thanks JDI). Check it out, it was pretty fun.

Sally, Shoo and LimeyGeorge... I have been told I have a slight accent but not a full-blown Southern draw. Dave did comment that I say Dane's differently then you mid-westerners. I'll work on talking more Canadian for you guys in future videos.
Denny Deaton   Monday, June 16, 2008

45) Ok, I have a new one (I think). I didn't read every one of them. I have the right Adobe Flash Player at home and it works great but it stops the video right as Dave is getting to the box in Dane's. I tried it 3 times and it cuts off right there every time and hits the end of the progression line. No credits this time. IE 6.0.2900, SP2. XP SP2

47) Loved the sweet jump! Also, great improv by random Dane's lady. Its a good thing Dave was cool with her being in the video, otherwise she would have totally been in the way. No problems playing the video here. Just updated to the latest WeatherBug/WinAmp/YahooToolbar/KaZaa/Limewire. Also helps to run 3 or more anti-virus programs at once and remove your CMOS battery to avoid power surges.
