We're Sorry…
We installed some important security updates on our server today, and when we tried to restart, it didn't come back up. Usually the restart process is complete in under a minute, and we avoid doing this when there is visible activity on the site. We need to be better about doing this late at night, but in this case we opted for a daytime restart because this was a pressing security concern.

On the plus side (and not related to this problem), we have updated the video player. You might have to refresh a video page in your browser to load the new player, but it applies to all videos, new or old.

The new player has major coding changes that are all for the better. One of the main things you will notice is that videos do not start loading when you go to a video page. We realized that each person will visit a video page multiple times, mainly to read new comments. Loading the video in with each page load is a waste of bandwidth and can cause unnecessary slow-down in your browser.

If you have become accustomed to letting the blue bar fill up before you play a movie, you can still do that. Just press the large play button, then quickly press it again. This triggers the downloading process and will pause the movie until you press play again.

We have also updated the code behind the mute button. This was a potential cause of some of the "I have no audio, bro!" complaints that we heard about but were never able to replicate. Also now you can mute the movie before it even starts playing.

Again, we're very sorry about the downtime. We're learning as we go, and are only up to page 12 of the "HTML for Dummies" picture book.

1) THANK YOU for turning off the loading automatically. I was going to ask if that would be possible but you beat me to it (again!) I have issues with the videos (I think it is the wireless router having issues) causing my connection to continually drop and require me to reboot the router over and over. I don't even have to view the video--just getting close to it automatically loaded is enough to trigger the drop. I finally uninstalled Flash Player to avoid the problem with the auto-load when I'd accidentally catch one when reading a comment. Maybe I can load Flash Player again and try once more. :) Before I go replace the @#$@# router. :) Thanks for all your hard work--I'll have to get a copy of that HTML for Dummies...sounds like a great book if you two are learning from it. :)

2) HELP-yesterday I was getting a message that I needed to update my browser and I followed the link but never could get it to upload-today I tried LimeyG's new video and bingo it played perfectly but then I couldn't get any of the others to go. I was trying to get China's to play and it would start then stop right away--I'm your biggest challenge as far as users go because I am definitely lacking in knowldege related to computers.

3) I don't know that you are their biggest challenge, Dannie. I finally went and bought a new wireless router because the videos caused my old one to disconnect and I'd have to go unplug it and then power it up again. Even getting close to one of those videos auto-loading was enough to zap me. I lost it and went for some new equipment. My router was at least 4 years old and I can already tell a difference in performance. Maybe it isn't all you. :)

4) Dannie,
Go to this web site and download the latest version. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1...

Then clear your browsers cache and all videos should play just fine for you after that. Let us know how it goes. Thanks.

5) I had exactly the same problem that Dannie had with China's video. The rest seem to be fine (much better than before!!!) Thanks, boys!!

6) Has the "What's New" web part on the home page always moved between photos, blogs and videos like it does now? I'm wondering if the old wireless router never moved the image fast enough for me to notice. I'm thinking this new router is long overdue! :) All of the video problems have stopped, btw. Only an occasional one seems to run and abort early--probably from a previous download or something. It's great to use the web like it should be for a change! :)

7) Linda,
The What's New section changed when we added video. We didn't have a way to fit it all in with the old layout so we built a rotator to accommodate the videos. I like it a lot better now!

8) Seriously, my old wireless router must have been having so many problems I never even saw it until after I got the new one. Very cool. I like it!!
