Avatars and Headers

We know that several of you have had problems adding new avatars and custom header images. You upload a new image, then it shows you your old one. This has been going on since the beginning of Humzoo, but it stops today.

The Problem

To quickly explain the problem, web browsers store images in a cache. When a page is loaded, the browser checks its cache. If it looks like it already has a copy of an image on a web page, it will show you the image from its cache, saving time by not having to download the image all over again. Every time you added a new avatar, it replaced the old one, but it kept the same filename. So your computer thought it was the same old image and never showed you the new one. Hitting "reload" usually solved the problem, but not always.

The Solution

We decided that the most reliable way to ensure that your current avatar and header files were correct was to give them a new filename each time a new version was uploaded. This change has gone into effect, and from this point on there should be no more caching issues.

In Addition

The tool that lets you resize and crop avatars and custom headers has also been upgraded. New in this version is a progress bar that is visible while your image loads into the tool. Super large images take awhile to load, and this way you can see what's going on.

Also new is a 'Cancel' button. Say you have a nice avatar now, but you want to see what a different photo would look like. So you upload an image. Then in the cropper/resizer tool thingie, you decide that it's just not going to work. No problem. Hit Cancel and you will see your old avatar (or header if you're editing that).

We're super excited about these changes, even if they are subtle and mostly transparent to the end user. Thank you to everyone who has given us feedback, both positive and negative. That helps us know what's going on out there and helps us prioritize what changes/fixes to implement first. Let us know what you think about these new changes.

Geez, if you guys are this good in separate places, I can't imagine what updates will be coming up on Monday...or after the two great minds are sizzling in the same room! Thanks for fixing that avatar and header issue!! I like my current selection but the temptation is strong to go play with it. :)

Hey, I just saw that Google is now offering custom headers for your iGoogle page. Did they get that idea from Humzoo??? :)
