DNC

I love National Convention time - it totally gets me in the voting spirit.

Usually.

Day 1 of the DNC was a bit of a disappointment. Ted Kennedy's surprise appearance aside, the night was pretty dull. I can only watch and listen to Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer in their purple ties and gray suits for so long before the large glass of red wine kicks in and I fall asleep on the couch. The best part was when Obama's youngest called him out for saying he was in St. Louis when he was, indeed, in Kansas City. "What city are you in, Daddy?" she asked him - pitch perfect - no more, no less. Rock on, little one.

Anyone else watch? What did you think? I'll be watching tonight - it will be interesting to listen to Hillary speak - but if it doesn't pick up, I don't think I'll be tuning in tomorrow. It's the Dem's turn to play the PR game with this convention - light on issues, heavy on glitter. It will be interesting to see what the GOP comes up with next week.

1) I think bowing to Kennedy was a mistake. He represents the far left wing of the party. Obama already has those votes. He needs to fight McCain for the middle ground. And surprisingly McCain is doing very well in the polls lately.

3) We hardly watched and Wolf Blitzer drives me crazy too. Sheesh. We did watch Teddy and I was very impressed. It was good to see him and his dedication to service is inspiring. The conventions don't do much for me. I have already made up my mind. I don't really even bother looking at what the media is saying at this point...polls and all. It all just seems to be ridiculous. As Ani says, "the media is not fooling me."

5) I thought Kennedy outshined Mrs. Obama, and I am philosophically far from both of them. Mrs. Obama was OK, not really any content, but that's consistent with the overall campaign thus far. She's somewhat likable, and the kids are adorable. Kudos for her comment about Hillary, that was classy and wise. Still, I expected much more. Maybe she did all she needed to do. Time will tell.

I agree with James Carville, it was a wasted night. I didn't hear anything that would have made me think Obama would make a good President. That said, the convention is young, and I do agree with Juan Williams, it was moving to see a functional black family in such a position of significance. That in itself, was an historical moment.

Very interesting- Gallup, for the first time, now shows McCain leading Obama (by 2 points). Apparently, the pick of Biden was a negative bounce for the Dems. Interesting to see if the Invesco stunt Thursday really packs the punch they hope it does, or, just cements the rock star over leader motif McCain is pushing quite successfully at the moment.

6) I just can't wait until next week when the GOP rolls out the 'big tent' with it's 5 token minorities and some good old fashioned country muzac. Yee-Hawww!!!!
This stuff is all one big week-long commercial, so I don't get too excited about it, although Obama's speech at the last convention was one of the brightest moments of the whole campaign for the Dem's, so I'll be looking forward to that. I don't expect much out of Hillary tonight. I think she's a pretty boring speaker when she's sincere, and downright awful when she's not.
Although the polls seem to have McCain ahead right now, I really, really don't believe that it will hold on for very long. He has succumbed to blatent pandering and superficiality since clenching the nomination. He's extremely bad at being a phony, and I think that most Americans will decide that it's time to move beyond a 'Roveian' candidate and executive office.
You guys condemn Obama for his lofty rhetoric and claim that there's no meat to his idealistic liberalism, but have you actually listened to John McCain lately? He is one of the emptiest GOP vessels that I have ever seen or heard. He used to be a man that wasn't afraid to say what he was thinking, or to delve into policy details, but the campaign team has successfully lobotomized him, and convinced him that to be a shit-grinning puppet is the only way to win. Maybe they're right, but how sad is that?

7) I enjoyed the speeches, but one thing truly pissed me off!
One commentator said a stupid offensive thing! I believe the comment was that Michelle should be less like Jackee and more like Jackie O. (referring to actress Jackee Harry, from "227" and the mom on "Sister Sister")
It just shocks me that something like that can be said, and about Michelle Obama...who is AMAZING!!!

8) Too bad nobody holds those dumbasses to their stupid remarks like they do the candidates.

9) When "Cue Ball" says it was a wasted night night, you can take it to the bank because he has been this type activity for at least 20years.

12) Yeah, I realized he doesn't ever refer people to their given names. Odd, hey?
I meant this part: "you can take it to the bank because he has been this type activity for at least 20years."

16) Matt- please tell us how you really feel. I can't make out your views :)

I thought Hillary did pretty well last night. It was forceful, even though the pundits were right- she did not really argue for Obama, just said let's keep the party together and he was the nominee.

I wonder what Bill will say tonight. I've gotten the impression he is much more anti-Obama than she ever was.
