Coldplay? Coldplay!
I know that there are music lovers out there who HATE Coldplay. I've heard the band called a lot of nasty things - SELL OUTS! U2 WANNABES! LOSERS! GWYNETH MARRIERS! And I can respect that. To each his own. But I love Coldplay. I have for a very long time. I tend to like anything with piano and a steady beat, and Coldplay provides that, plus plenty of Chris Martin falsetto and dynamic lyrics. They are great live, even if their sets are a bit short. Parachutes lived in my CD player (yes, CD player) for most of high school, and I think I'll always hold a soft spot in my heart for their music.
Which is why yesterday was a happy day for me. At 7:15 a.m., the band made their newest single - Violet Hill - available for free download from their website, coldplay.com. You better believe I set my alarm. Apparently there was an overwhelming demand for the single, and I didn't actually get the e-mail with download instructions until about 6:00 p.m. But I got it. And I downloaded it. And I listened to it all day on loop. And I love it. It's everything Coldplay is good at: Quiet. Loud. Pretty. Steady. Sing-alongable. Guitar. Piano. Chris Martin Falsetto.
From reviews I've read, if you like Violet Hill you will like the rest of the CD. It's decidedly Coldplay, but not old and worn out. The sound is just different enough to be new, without being a complete reinvention.
The album is scheduled to release in early June, and I'm more than excited for a Coldplay summer. Anyone with me?

Heck yeah, count me in. Coldplay is one of those bands that I can listen to almost any time. I find myself skipping over U2 and RHCP quite a bit these days on shuffle, but I can't turn down Green Eyes or Clocks, or even Yellow, after all these years. Looking forward to the new album big time.

I tried to get the free song but with all the issues it has with different email servers...it was too complicated for me :(
The new Death Cab for Cutie album is really good! I mean its gonna be really good. I can kind of tell already if you know what I mean.
Oh yes. I love Death Cab's new single. It's going to be a good music summer in NC. I'm also going to see Tom Petty in Raleigh in July. Did I mention I'm a nerd?
Also, speaking of Death Cab - I would really love a Postal Service reunion.

Oh - I like Coldplay - was hoping they would get added to the Bonnaroo line - up but sadly - it seems those rumours were false - as were the rumors of Led Zepplin
