Wednesday, July 1st, 2009"Huh?" That's what Mia has been saying frequently for several months now. Combine that with her loud talking and doctors always saying she has fluid in here ears during check ups, and that's what led me to believe she has a hearing problem.
I took her to the pediatrician a couple of weeks ago, and she tried their hearing test. She sort of failed. They weren't positive because the test is really designed for a slightly older child. She also had fluid in her ears yet again. So, they scheduled an appointment for her with the ENT.
We saw the ENT today. She was very good and sat in a soundproof booth with me so the audiologist could test her hearing and something like a Tympanometry test or something. She can hear the words and sounds mostly okay, but she sort of fails the tympanometry test because she has quite a bit of fluid in her ears.
The ENT recommended tubes since she has had these problems for such a long time now. I counter-recommended allergy treatment first. He accepted that. So, we are trying 6 weeks of allergy meds to see if they clear up the fluid for her. Then, we'll have another check-up.
And if she still has fluid...well, I still probably won't go for the tubes unless he thinks that not getting them will cause permanent damage. Otherwise, she really seems to get by okay. We just have to talk a little louder or repeat things. I'm so not a doctor, but I think this will be less of a problem as she gets older and her body changes a bit so her ears drain better on their own.
The audiologist was very impressed with her speech development. That's a good note. Also, Mia was extremely well-behaved today. I was so proud of her.
At first we were a little nervous about tubes. People have really talked them up to be a bad thing. It's a very minor surgery though. Very quick, painless to the child (awkward more so) and really improved Dylan's hearing and overall wellness. At this point both of the tubes fell out. She still has a little fluid in one ear and the other actually has a hole, which is serving as a tube and keeps things nice and dry in there. Depending on if the fluid goes away in her left ear she might need another tube in just that ear.
Hope all goes well with Mia and she avoids the Tube Monster! If not, it's not all that bad.
