Gimme a Brake!

No seriously. I think we need new brakes on the van. This has not been confirmed by a professional since the only work we have had done is oil changes and new tires since we bought it.

Dave wants to take it to a professional. But I'm pretty sure Papa Jay (my mom's husband) has the necessary tools of destruction for us to do it ourselves. I don't think Dave's going to help me.

I'd like to have them replaced before we go to NC in April. I realize this is silly because we use our brakes more in town than we would on a long highway trip, but it's a good goal. Would I be crazy to do this myself?

1) No, it's real easy. You'll need a socket set, c clamp and a jack. You might also need a special socket that looks like a star. They have them at Autozone or O'Reily. I've changed my brakes (front) before and if you have the time and patience, do it. Plus, you can google your vehicle type and change brakes and you'll find many articles on the subject.

2) Courtney, if you successfully change the brakes and make it to NC in one piece, I will need you to look at my car. It has been making a strange clicking sound. I will pay you in waffles and clean sheets. Thanks!

3) Very easy to do brakes, especially if Papa Jay has done them before. My husband does ours all the time, and he's a programmer.

4) I bet you could do a youtube search for a tutorial on changing brakes. I have no doubt that you'll be able to do it by yourself. :)

5) Papa Jay has all the tools required. I spoke to him today about the brakes, and he said pads no problem. It would only take a little bit of time. He has all the jack necessary. I know he would especially enjoy the tutorial if he is working with you Courtney. He is always happy to help Dave but it would give him a real kick to show you how. Just let him know when. You know he has alot more available time now. See you tomorrow night.

6) Joe (aka MacGyver) once fixed my brakes with chewing gum and a paper clip. True story.
