Three Years Ago
Three years ago today, I was stuck in a hospital bed having a baby forcibly evicted from my body. I had developed PIH (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension). Basically, I had wicked high blood pressure and a resting heart rate of 140. And I weighed almost 70 pounds more than I do right now. I wasn't doing well, and I had already been through some nasty stuff at the cardiologist because of it. So, my wise ob/gyn decided to evict the little stinker at 39 weeks.
Ethan David was born somewhere in the 8:00 p.m. hour during, I believe, an important basketball game involving North Carolina. Dave's mom could fill you in on that. My doctor was only slightly preoccupied with the game. She had me start pushing before I was completely dilated in an effort to get home to watch.
After only 20 minutes of pushing, I was greeted with a fat, screaming, healthy baby boy. His size actually shocked the doctor. She had no idea he was anywhere near 9 lbs 4 oz.
He has turned into such a smart, funny and loving little boy. I couldn't ask for more. We had a rough patch, though. The first year of his life was a blur of screaming. If I had known those first several months would have been so bad, I wouldn't have been quite so eager to sign up for the labor induction.
But now, I wouldn't trade him for the world. Happy Birthday, Ethan!
