Movie Night
So... Courtney wanted to watch a movie tonight. She said something "funny or action-like" would be good. So I went to the computer and hastily typed in "movies in 2007" and quickly made my way down the list. I saw one called I Am Legend, which had Will Smith. I wasn't sure what kind of movie it was, but it's well known that any movie with Will Smith will be to Courtney's liking.

So I started downloading it. The download was going to take like 2 hours, and we were ready to watch the movie well before it was done downloading. So I put on Super Bad, thinking that it would be a good fall-back movie. I forgot though that the first half hour of that is really just made for 13 year-old boys, so it wasn't really going over too well.

I Am Legend finished downloading just before the whole "McLovin fake id" scene in Super Bad, which was a shame. Anyway, I loaded the movie on my iPod and brought it down to the living room.

We started watching the movie around 9:00 or so. We rarely finish a movie. Usually about twenty minutes into it we'll both be on our laptops and totally unaware of what's going on. Courtney will leave and go up to bed, and I'll either fall asleep or head upstairs to work on Humzoo stuff.

It was fun to start watching the movie tonight, 'cause I had no idea what the movie was about. All I knew about it was that Will Smith was like the last dude on Earth and was all alone in a vacant New York. How could that be bad?

Well, it was pretty entertaining until about half an hour into the movie when the zombies came out. No seriously - there were zombies. And freaky ones. And it was dark outside, which is the worst time to watch a zombie movie. As everyone knows, there are two known facts about zombies: 1) they only come out at night, and 2) they want to eat your flesh.

So it was a nice evening. We sat terrified on the couch, too scared to even get up and go find a snack. No computers, no books. The movie wasn't terribly bad, just really freaky. Now it's 11:00 and dark and we are still on the couch. Courtney went to the bathroom a little while ago, but she sprinted back through the dark hallway and jumped back onto the couch.

I think we'll be stuck here until dawn. Please send help.

1) Help on its way. This is just the kind of adventure I've been looking for after a hard day ripping up carpet and painting kilz.

I'm coming.....fast as I can....will be there before dawn. If I run into any zombies I might have to turn back though.

2) ....just as I thought....I checked out the route on traffic.com and found that your street is actually inaccessible due to the zombie union picketing your street for royalties. You might be able to appease them with some raw meat. Do you have any steaks in the refrigerator? You might want to toss them out of the window if you haven't already boarded them up.

3) Mrs. Shoo totally freaked out when I took her to see it. She doesn't do well with scary stuff.

There's an alternate ending floating around on the netz. In my opinion, it's better than the ending they stuck on the film.

4) Movie endings are only any good when the movie sucks. If the movie is great then the ending is bound to suck because you don't want the movie to end.

5) Not sure if you have come to the big dog scene yet, but we really liked Will's dog and very sad to see what happened to him. Yikes, I don't want to give it away. But, we really liked his dog. :(

6) ...afterall, a dog does posses flesh but isn't aware of the zombie threat. There are many ways dogs can be our friend; defending us and offering up their flesh to distract the zombies from our escape is a major advantage.

7) Thanks for the tip Shoo. I found the alternate ending here:
http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/03/05/must-watch-i-am-...

I think that was a lot better than the one we saw in the movie. It seemed to wrap up the whole story better and give at least a little bit of sympathy to the zombies. That will be helpful on the way upstairs to our dark bedroom, where we are headed shortly. Please no zombies. Thank you.

8) "don't worry 'bout a ting, every little thing is going to be alright" Ok, wrong Marley song but hopefully it'll help you sleep!

9) Oh man, don't get me started about this movie, it was so flawed it wasn't funny. First, how is it possible that someone has NEVER heard of Bob Marley? Then, why did the zombie dogs have to wait for the millimeter thin slice of light to go away before they could attack Will Smith? Couldn't they handle the millisecond of pain? And in the same scene, how come the mindless blood thirsty zombies just sat and watched the dogs go attack and not go attack, too? I guess I was entertained while I was watching it (good cinematography and cool to see empty NYC), but I felt duped after it was done due to the ridiculousness of it all.

10) this was my big question the whole time as well... and sorry if it is a stupid one, but, why didn't the zombies eat each other? It was very far fetched and hard to believe. But we like Will Smith as an actor, and had to give it go. And Dave, I watched the alternative ending, didn't think i had anymore sympathy for the zombies, they were just too aaaggghhhrrrrr for me.

11) I don't think my husband enjoyed this remake at all, and I don't watch movies like this because I don't like blood, gore, horror, etc. I normally don't like many suspense movies either, but if they promise not to have any of the aforementioned OR an unecessary "romantic interlude," I might watch.

Oh, and I think I prefer the Will Smith that starred in Pursuit of Happyness, and the only "action" role I've enjoyed him doing was Men in Black.

12) Dave, Like Shoo said, we'd watched the movie. I thought it was okay, but the ending kind of ruined it for me. Plus it was scary...that's a negative in my book. Anyway, after seeing the alternate ending and how much better it fit with the movie, I decided to pick up the book. I haven't started reading it yet, but basically, the title is supposed to be kind of a twist, as in the Will Smith character is a legend with the zombie guys because he goes around killing them...like he's the horror story not them. The zombies are supposed to be smart and sympathetic, and they just try to catch him so that he'll stop killing them. Anyway, going to read the book in the next week or so...hopefully it's good.

13) i couldn't even finish that movie; stopped about the time the dog died and had 'watched' through my hands so I didn't know where the zombie dogs had come from. freaky doesn't even start to explain/describe this flick! and don't get me started on the mannequins! major freakiness.

14) 10 days later.

Dave, Troy and I saw this moving as we hopped from Juno to this (what?! law..). Anyway, I thought it was a great movie for it's social message and commentary and the conversations that those messages may open up.

I think if you just look at it as a zombie movie, then it's totally forgettable, but as social message, it's great!

Zombie movies scare the bajesus out of me; especially 28 Days - I will never watch that one again (despite the social messages lining it).

15) Did you use iTunes to download the movie? What was the cost?

BTW: Whenever you make a purchase on iTunes (or at a number of other websites, and websites of stores), you can cause a percentage of your contribution to go to an organization or charity of your choice - through GoodShop. Same when you search the web, using the GoodSearch search engine. (There are several others that do the same thing.)

Unlike the past three summers, I am not working regular hours right now (am instead supposed to be catching up on stuff, for a potential job starting next month)... So I have had a little time, to watch movies - both on DVD, and in the theater (I got back from Iron Man), just a few hours ago.

Speaking of Will Smith movies (in this entry of yours), have you seen Hancock? I just saw that it has been added to the list of films at the Route 66 Drive-In.

I am not that impressed with that place... But it is kind of a neat experience.
