Lincoln Magnet School Video
Last week I wrapped up a video project for the school district that has been a few weeks in the making. One of our schools, Lincoln Magnet School, was nominated for the Apple Distinguished Schools Award. One of the requirements is to make a video about 5 minutes long that basically documents the school.

I visited Lincoln several times with my video camera, and each time I'd go, more and more kids would recognize me. The first time I was totally an outsider, which was weird. But the last day I taped, some kids were calling me Mr. Heinzel and asking when I'd be back. That was unexpected for sure, as I usually try to be a fly on the wall when I'm shooting video like this.

One thing I thought would be neat to do was focus on a student or two rather than have a ton of different faces throughout. I did end up with a ton of different kids, but there are two in particular that are siblings that I focused on, especially near the end. I called their mom to set up a time where I could come videotape at their house, because the students have laptops that they work on at night, and I thought it would be important to show the home perspective.

For music, I used several GarageBand loops and what not. The second song is a Dave original, although it's heavily based on two songs (bonus point to anyone guessing either song). I have a hard time using anything that's not my own, but I'm getting to the point where I realize that my stuff isn't that good. It's OK for what it is, but I'm not a musician. Also it's super time consuming.

Anyway, the video was shown around Lincoln earlier this week, and I heard that it literally brought some people to tears. That was certainly not the intended result, but I guess when you're that tied to a school, it becomes like family. I really did fall in love with the school. The staff gave me an awesome Lincoln Magnet School shirt in exchange for the video, which I wore all day yesterday. I'll probably wear it every other day until it's threadbare.

I didn't want to post this video on Humzoo due to it being for work and having students, so please follow the link above to see the movie if you're interested. I think it's my most professional video to date, and I can't wait to make some more. I do have another one in the works that focuses on the district as a whole.

1) Definitely professional but I found the format very interesting too. Can you imagine how advanced those kids are going to be? It just boggles my mind.
Congratulations-excellent!

2) Very well done Dave. I was so captured by the presentation that I was only vaguely aware of music in the background. I didn't find it distracting at all, and that's a really good thing.

3) Great video, Dave. I agree with Dannie on the potential of the students. If school had been that supportive and worked to individualize and personalize school as much as this school appears to do--how much better we all would have done in school. The music was nice. As Leslie said unobtrusive but it definitely supported the video in a creative and positive way.

And kudos to Apple for supporting students in this fashion! Makes me proud to own a Mac! :)

5) That's a superb video Dave. It totally sums up the reason why our department exists and I learned lots from it too. I rarely get to see the results of what we do as a department so that was very satisfying from a personal standpoint. I have to admit that helping prepare the computers and helping in roll-outs I was a little cynical about the benefits of the one to one program. However, the video gives me hope that the kids really are extra motivated as a result.

9) Very nicely done, Dave!! Not only was your work with the camera done very well, you captured the essence of Lincoln School and how it is unique in Springfield. After watching this video I found I had developed a feeling about what a wonderful atmosphere this school has created between teacher and student. No, I wouldn't come out of retirement to be in a teaching situation like I saw, but it is tempting!!

10) Thanks for sharing Dave. I saw my neighbor girl/babysitter a couple of times (3.39 and 3.16). She is a great girl and I know she loves her school. I got a lot from the video, but I am still not sure what the real difference is between Lincoln and Grant for instance. I have another neighbor girl/babysitter who goes to Grant. I think they are taking all of the same advanced classes and she also has a laptop she takes home frequently. Maybe she does not get to use hers as much - not sure. As a parent of a couple of future 186 students. I think I have some research to do.
