My First Feature-Length Movie
This is definitely my most ambitious goal to date, but I decided on a whim the other day that by the end of 2009, I need to finish a feature-length movie. I do not have a story, I don't know any professional actors, I have no budget, I have a distinct lack of freetime -- all things that motivate me even more somehow.

The first step is the story. I bought a notebook that I will try to have with me at all times so I can jot down story or character ideas. There are two or three movie ideas that I have been kicking around in my head, but I need to focus on something simple and start on an outline. From there I will fine-tune the story, eventually ending up with a full script and storyboard.

Then it's time to scout locations, find people willing to help, beg and borrow materials and props, give Courtney enough back rubs to make up for time away from the house -- that kind of thing.

I know I have my work cut out for me, more so than I probably even pretend to realize. But there's not point waiting. My passion is movies, and I've always wanted to make them. I'm not getting any younger, so I better get to it. What's the worst that can happen?

2) The worse that can happen is that you don't folow your dream. Good Luck, can't wait for the premier. NC is a great place to film!

4) I was actually reading that and got this weird image in my head of Dave scribbling feverishly in his little black notebook. Huddled in some dark and rainy corner, trying to hammer out the details of that odd thing that keeps going around in his head. Okay, so I'm thinking insanity is the worse that could happen. ;) Good luck! I always believe we should follow our dreams and those that really love us will be there to support us all the way to the end. Whatever that end is.

5) ! would make a good actress in said film- she's already been nominated for best supporting actress for her "stare through the window while eating pie" in the Great Leaf Chase, or whatever it was called.

Dave, sounds exciting. You could secure my acting services for about 85K, so long as we're not talking about a Blair Witch type movie (then the fee goes up). Good advice from Scott. Just don't beat yourself up if its Dec. 31, 2009 and the goal isn't completely finished.... maybe give yourself a mini-goal, like have a story, script, and cast by July 1, or something. Then you can evaluate where to go from there. Then again, what takes longer- writing the story, or, actual filming?

I have every confidence you will do something great with this. Can't wait to see the finished product one day.

6) I really admire people like you who make time to achieve goals like this. Sometimes it takes a lot to set aside extra time, but when it's something that really makes you happy, it's so worth it in the end.

7) Watch it, Brian, I can stare through other things besides windows if you're not good. And it was called See You Next Fall FYI.

8) Dave, I already have your mom's big line written....

"I'll have what she's having!"

The trivia nerds will get it.

9) That reminds me. TCM always does a "farewell" to all the notable people in the movie industry at the end of each year. Apparently "I'll have what she's having" cameo star died in 2008.

Dave, we know you have the potential--just need to narrow down your choices and find the pieces and parts. I watched a goofy Steve Martin movie called Bowfinger and for some reason kept thinking about you and your videos. Maybe you need to do like him and start a box in the attic socking away a dollar a week (maybe more--he started at 10) to pay for your movie. :) We'll be looking for updates as they come (and of course more great videos!)

10) Russ, that's my Mom dude. Wrong. So very wrong.

Dave, if you need to harm any cats during the making of your film, I have a few I'd like to offer.

14) I didn't realize we had so many people on Humzoo that had actually made a full-length feature film before. You've got some good advice to start with Dave.

15) Dave - Our gang of 9 (or 10 when baby Day arrives) would like to offer our services as extras. Any exotic locations would be great!

17) Thank you all for the awesome feedback. I'm sure I'll use everyone as extras at some point in the movie, in addition to other miscellaneous jobs (cookie fetcher, light mover, dolly puller, etc).

18) Unlike most HumzOoers, I do not want to be in your movie; however, I have two very "easy-on-the-eyes" children that could be offered.

19) I have a friend (local to my area) who has done some movie stuff. He's actually a screenwriter... by hobby. But has had one or two films actually make it through full production and they've gone to film festivals. He's got a TON of equipment he's purchased himself. Anyway... my point is, if you are interested at some point in talking to someone who has btdt, I am certain my friend would be happy to talk about it (film making is his favorite subject). Just let me know.

22) Dave- just kidding about the salary requirements, I'd be in for free, of course. But you'd have to make it a sugar cane or orange grove mystery piece, for it to be close enough for my participation!

23) I think a good movie idea would be a story about a bunch of teenagers who go to a deserted camp site and get killed by a guy in a hockey mask. You could probably have several sequals as well.

24) Since I know so much about this stuff (not!), I'll put my 2 cents in. Find a screenplay writer, someone who can concentrate on the boring writing parts. That way you can concentrate on more of the film aspect. Keep jotting down you're ideas but when it comes to actual writing of a screenplay, it can be extremely tedious and boring.

25) I actually got a pretty good idea last night while sleeping. I woke up at 5 a.m. and couldn't go back to bed. I definitely do want to write the screenplay myself, although I know you're right soundchick, it will be tedious. But I'm actually looking forward to that part quite a bit. Should be an interesting experience at the least.

27) This is also the best way to make a New Year's resolution. We'll all be keeping you on track as well as waiting to be called for that "extra" or "mob scene".

28) Hi--I just wanted to share a great open source screenwriting software that you might already have, but it makes writing a script much easier and faster for those of us that might not be dedicated screenwriters:
celtx.com
It's awesome. You can even use it for storyboarding and planning, etc.

Also, I'd love to know your compression/video hosting techniques on your website--your videos always look very clear, uncompressed, and bedazzled! :-)

BEST of luck with the feature!

30) Yes, the meeting tonight is ON. Last week was the last time in my foreseeable future that I will not be able to attend, so from this point out, we should meet weekly for quite some time. Please tell Veronica I'm sorry she didn't get the word. We told people at the last meeting to check the site (where we did put a cancelation notice), but we also tried to contact each student.
