Help Me Choose a Logo

Last fall, I assembled a group of students to make a movie for Apple's Insomnia Film Festival. Apple postponed the contest with the intention of having it "after the holidays." They announced last week that they are canceling the contest indefinitely.

I was pretty bummed about this, not so much for the Film Club kids, but there are several other students and teachers in the district who have been looking forward to the contest as well. It's pretty crappy of Apple to back out of this so late in the game, and it has severely damaged their reputation with me and several of our students.

I decided that we need to go ahead and have a film contest of our own. I'm going to announce a Student Film Contest very soon, which will be open to all schools in the Springfield area. We'll have similar rules as the Apple contest, with the exception of having to shoot everything in one day. I'll give them a couple months at least.

The prizes are up in the air, but I have a few ideas. Right now though, I need a logo. I've designed a few, but I'd love to have some input from the Humzoo community. Any input is appreciated, such as overall first impression, new ideas, whether or not any of these are even good, etc. Here's what I have so far:

1) I vote for #8. It's nice and clean and emphasizes "Student" more than the rest. I also like having the year included.

21) I just added some color variations on number 10 (now number 11). I also adjusted the mic cord weight and cleaned up the spacing on the letters "VIDEO." I'm not sure what color variations I like. All options above not only have different colors, but different element color choices (B is only a colored mic, A has colored mic and STUDENT, etc). Decisions are hard when you're the client.

23) If this goes well, yes, I'd like to make it annual. But I might also be able to have a contest each semester, in which case the year would make it very confusing. I like the idea of dropping it for that reason. Also, although I loved the dots on the microphone, I think Spike was correct to drop them. They were unnecessary visual noise, and the logo is cleaner without them. There are already quite a few letters in the logo, so the cleaner the better.

Have I mentioned that I hate logo design? It's probably one of my least favorite things to do.

26) I liked #7 in my head, but on paper it's too busy. It also has this whole weird Segway issue going on. Once you see the Segway in the logo, it's hard to take it seriously.

29) I like 2. It's obvious about it being a video (to me) but has a slightly off-kilter set to the letters that makes it seem more avant garde or creative in an off-beat or fun way.

31) I do like the angles of the text in #2, but agree with Ninster23 that the clapboard is a bit cliche nowadays plus it doesn't have the year included.

So I'm voting for #6 -- I like the boom, especially with the year worked into the design, and it looks like it's at the appropriate angle for a boom, plus I didn't enjoy the way the boom mike was attached to the "O" in VIDEO in #7, which is why I didn't vote for that one. I also wasn't quite sure about the "reel" look of the letter "O" on that choice...too noisy, maybe?

40) The boom makes me think audio so that's why I liked the clapboard or whatever it is called. It is more "movie" when I see it on anything. I guess anyone entering would see a boom and think video instead of me thinking music. LOL

45) I like the black and white. The addition of color takes away a lot of its power. I like the year in the microphone as well. It really makes the mike seem like a necessary part of the logo.
