Bummer.
So you know that script I wrote for Film Club that starred a local celebrity? Well, it was none other than Gus Gordon. I dropped the script off with him today in hopes that I'd hear back that he would love to help.

He sent me a very nice email tonight saying that he would not be able to be in our movie. The reason is that his station's parent company prohibits him from appearing in any outside video productions. He said he even had to stop doing commercials for a local company that he's done for many years.

That's a pretty big bummer. This was the first actual script that I've written, and it would have been a wonderful experience for the film club to produce.

Now the question is: do we move on with someone else, or do we scrap the project? I'm trying not to give away the story in case we move forward with it. But I just can't imagine anyone else playing that character.

This kind of feels like the let down we had when Apple canceled the Insomnia Film Festival right before we shot our movie. We were bummed, but we decided to move forward anyway. We could still make this movie I suppose. I guess I'll see what the club wants to do.

If you're in film club and are hearing about this here for the first time, sorry. But I had to vent so that I could move on.

2) Bummer dude, that's not cool. That parent company needs to be more mature, like a parent, and loosen up a little. Hopefully they'll come around. If not I will consider being your star. Let me know how much money is involved and we'll start working out a deal.

3) Sorry to hear things didn't work out, Dave. Maybe another way will show up--a different slant in the script or another actor who would fit the bill. And Denny has experience--he's signed autographs in Hollywood...or was it some other CA city? They all look alike to people in Oregon. ;)

We will see your film club rally I'm sure. You guys are too good to let this stop you.

4) What about other local celebs? Some radio personalities that are involved with the Muni come to mind.

5) So sorry to hear that, Dave. I know that's a big disappointment because you've been looking forward to a possible Gus Gordon connection for a long time. That's too bad. But I know you and I know you'll come back stronger than ever!! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

6) If we can't get Gus, I'd rather get someone who has a connection to Film Club somehow and has a lot of time on their hands. Anyone know of a 40-60 year-old who could double for a weatherman / actor / antagonist?

7) Many years ago I was asked by the district Science Coordinator if I was interested in applying for the meteorologist position at Channel 20. I told him no. I think some guy by the name of Gordon ended up with the job! I could probably do as well as predicting the weather as he does, but I don't fall into the 40-60 year old category! Hey, isn't that discrimination????

8) Why don't you run a Gus Gordon look-a-like contest? The prize could be lunch with the real Gus Gordon (if he agrees) or maybe a tour of channel 20 hosted by Biker Ben. Time to get creative! Don't scrap the project!!!!

9) Leslie and I are on the some wave length-I agree, it would really stimulate interest! Another idea would be to write the "parent company" It would be a great special interest story since it would be helping the schools. Don't give up on the idea quite yet. What about the actor from WKRP Cin.-is he still alive? He might do it as a "charitable" act. I also think that a certain suave, debonair and very intelligent, 65 year old close to your heart would be a wonderful weatherman.!!!!!!!

10) Jim Leach from WMAY might do it. He is really involved in the Muni and other plays in town.

11) Sorry to hear Dave :( I've never heard that rule....but then again I never looked too hard at my contract. They said "sign here"...I said "ok". Hope the project can still be completed!

12) Hey Dave, what's stopping you from going ahead and finding a lookalike, then shooting the movie in a public place where "Gus Gordon" just happens to walk by? Like and "unplanned" cameo.

13) Gus was the antagonist and had plenty of dialog with the protagonist. A stalker-cam man-on-the-street video clip of him wouldn't quite be the same, not to mention that it's just kind of creepy. But there's nothing stopping us from changing the main character's name and choosing another actor, which is what we'll do.
