Making the switch to Humzoo

I really thought that it would be a long time before I was ready to move daveheinzel.com over to Humzoo. I have been using that site for 8 years now, and have hundreds of blogs, several videos, thousands of photos and countless comments.

But today I am officially starting to use Humzoo as my main site. I am going to set up some large notes on daveheinzel.com that let people know I've moved, and at some point I am going to just set up daveheinzel.com to redirect people over here automatically.

The one major area that I am not sure how to handle yet is videos. I have around 60 videos that I have posted on daveheinzel.com, and I plan to add to those in the future as time allows. Humzoo does not have a video section yet, so I'm probably going to have to host them elsewhere and just put up links here. But this will only be more motivation to make a video tool on Humzoo, although I know what's involved in doing that, and it is not am addition to be taken lightly.

Anyway, I made an executive decision to NOT move over all my old blogs and what not. They will stay at daveheinzel.com for now, and at some point I'll save them to my hard drive and back them up in a couple places. But I imagine that at some point I will just take down daveheinzel.com all together or use it as a portfolio site or something. Who knows.

What I do know is that we made Humzoo to be very easy to use, and the tools to add blogs and photos are exactly what I want for daveheinzel.com. But my tools there are very outdated, and it is very time consuming and irritating to do so much as to upload a photo album. So I'm hoping that it will be easier here. But if I run into some problems or need better tools, guess what - I'll make them. And then you can all benefit from them as well hopefully. Sweet!

Anyway, it will be a rough transition for me and I'm sure for my regular visitors. I'm sorry if this inconveniences anyone, and I'm sorry that I'm not porting over all my old content. It's time to clean the closet, and this is a good time to start anew.

Dave, I admire your decision the join the peasants at humzoo and not just sit upon your thrown while looking down at your co-creation.

Thanks Jef. When developing Humzoo, Denny and I worked with the mentality that we would solve our problems first, and in doing that, we could create tools that other people would enjoy as well. We figured that if we were having some problems with something, we probably weren't alone.

So in the end what we created was a much better system than either of us were using on our own sites. For any techies out there, some of my content had to be entered directly through phpMyAdmin, which is about the most inefficient way to enter new content to a site on a regular basis (although phpMyAdmin does make a good DB administration tool, no doubt).

Anyway, I just got done uploading my first photo album here, and it was awesome. I tested the system a million times during the production of this site, but there's something intangible about using the tools "for real" that really helps me see them in a more realistic light.

I'll second that first comment. And I know how hard it can be to leave some place that, not only have you had for so long, but that also has such specific name recognition. That's quite a commitment.

Welcome to Humzoo Dave!

I just want to know if you're paying $25 for a humdinger account.

Oh we're paying for it Fritz. I don't think I have slept more than 5 hours a night since Humzoo launched.

I guess the pressure is on now since Dave moved over. dennydeaton.com turned into a ghost town last week when we launched Humzoo. No complaints here, the response has been incredible, but I am totally jealous of the Humzoo Community and I want to be more than just a measly comment leaver dude. I want to share my life on Humzoo. It may happen sooner than I expected and I'll have to figure out what to do with all the old stories, films and photos later.

Denny, you're a shady commenter.

Hey Dave! Well this will limit my daily visits to one site if both you and Denny are here. For your archives, it might be nice if we could add favorite site links to our humzOo sites...and one for your site (and for Denny's too) could link back to you archives or to your films until you figure how to do that (sorry english teachers). But still that is more work and you both need to catch up on some sleep.

Not a bad idea Spike. Denny, want to add that to our suggestion log? I would but I'm on my iPhone lying in bed at home sick. Guess my lack of sleep has finally caught up with me.

Also, mom and dad, if you're reading this, we're gonna have to push back our lunch date. I'll call you a little later if I don't see you online first.

I'm shady alright Betsy, slim shady.. shady in ways more than my comments.

Uh oh, one person has asked me to move. I think if one more asks its official, cause that will be all my visitors at once. Dave I am home sick too, in bed, surfing Humzoo on my Motorola M800 Bag Phone. Humzoo looks absolutely incredible on this thing. The only problem is that I have to keep it plugged into the wall. I need an extension cord. Right now Dylan is running the site, I have her coding a new omelet maker for us all. I think it will go over really well for the breakfast crowd. She'll be done by lunch.

Great suggestion Spike, its on the wish list.

I thought bag phones only worked in the car, did you install a ciggarette lighter in our bedroom?

Heck yeah, I hooked it up to your portable aspirator. Works like a charm!

Got the message, Dave. Mom will probably end up here soon and see it also, but I will tell her anyway. Get feeling better soon - but remember, tomorrow is supposed to bring in temperatures above 60. My boat has been cleaned and all my fishing gear is ready - as well as me. So if you are better tomorrow (which I hope you are) you will be doing lunch with only mom or we can put it off till later; I will lunch on Lake Springfield tomorrow!!

Dude, your dad totally just chose to go fishing over having lunch with you! Dang!!! That is just wrong.

With that said I hope the fish are biting tomorrow Mr. Heinzel! That is awesome, I would definitely chose to go fishing over having lunch with Dave too.
Denny Deaton   Tuesday, March 11, 2008
Would both you boys pulllleeeeeezzzzzzzz get some sleep?????!!!!! (We're really enjoying Humzoo by the way. Congratulations to you both!!!)

When the weather does warm up I will be spending less time browzing around Humzoo (bad news for you guys) and more time fishing (good news for me). I, also, want to congratulate both of you for the great job you have done creating this site. Denny, I am looking forward to meeting you someday, hopefully soon.

Mr. H!
You'll be glad to know that we want to make a mobile version of Humzoo one day for people on the go like yourself.

Can't wait to meet you someday as well! You don't know it yet but we are going to rent the beach house right next to yours this summer. And Dylan will be hoisting water balloons from our porch to yours until you invite us over for dinner. Don't say I didn't warn ya.

Awesome!!! Does Dave's aunt know about you renting this cottage - she has had it booked since December!!! Tell Dylan I use to be a baseball pitcher in high school and college and at age 63, I still have enough coordination and arm left to catch the balloons and launch them back.
If not enough arm is left, I will probably use my surf fishing rod and reel to get the water balloons launched. Better yet, maybe I will collect the ballons and fix pan-fried balloons over seaweed when you come dinner!!!

Denny, your assumption that my dad has a cell phone that can browse the web, much less one that can display graphics of any sort, or one that is not rotary, is cute. But he does have his own blog now, thanks to *humzoo* (shameless promotion), which is pretty awesome.
Mista Betts   Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Mista Sally, I don't even have a phone that will browse the tubes. How embarrasing huh? Maybe one day I will break down and buy one of those fancy iPhone's that all your Heinzel's have. Or I might just "borrow" Dave's when he comes down next month. He'll realize it about the time he's driving back through VA and it will be way to late to turn around at that point.
Denny Deaton   Tuesday, March 11, 2008

That you think we will be driving through VA makes me question your geographical awareness. Obviously we will take a more direct route, starting in IL, cutting through IA, heading east through CA and finally taking the bridge over to NC. Duh.

Cool route, Dave - I think my sister took that same route to Memphis a couple months ago. Now, that straight shot through VA is how she got back to P-town from Indiana.

I don't think you can get to NC from Illinois can you?

Ask Andrew about driving to NC. I think the year he met up with us mid-week at the Outer banks he took the ?scenic? Bloomington-Baltimore-Kitty Hawk route. That's probably why he arrived mid-week.

Hey Dave hows life been? Its Steve from the skatepark. Davids friend. Havent talked to ya in a while so i thought i would see how ya been.

What's up Steven. I've been busy making this site, but I'm ready for it to warm up so I can get back out to the park. Last time I went there it was covered with snowy glaciers. Guess they could turn it into a snowboard park from Dec - Feb. Talk to you later dude.
