More French Films
Since my last blog, I've watched a couple more French films and have downloaded a handful more to watch soon. I'm really falling in love with them for a number of reasons.

Last night I watched White (or Blanco), the second movie in the Three Colors trilogy by Kieslowski. It is a completely different type of movie from Blue, the first one which I watched yesterday. It was less abstract and had wonderful moments of dark humor. I was never quite sure what was around the next turn, but I never felt lost. The pace was nice - not too fast, not too slow. It didn't have nearly the cinematic beauty of Blue, but the type of story didn't necessarily require aesthetic beauty throughout.

Tonight I watched Chocolat. It stars Juliette Binoche, from Blue. It was a very nice movie. The characters were interesting, the story was compelling and the cinematography was beautiful. I especially enjoyed how the religious conflicts evolved during the course of the movie. The ending was enjoyable and paced just right.

The next movie I need to watch is Red, the final film of the Three Colors trilogy. Maybe I'll stay up tonight and watch it. Some other movies I have on tap: Summer Hours, Funny Games, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The English Patient and Flight of the Red Balloon.

1) Tonight I watched Funny Games (the U.S. version), which is a shot-for-shot remake of the Austrian film by the same name, made 10 years earlier by the same director. It has nothing to do with French films, but it showed up on my radar this weekend so I downloaded it.

I don't want to give away much about the movie, but I wouldn't recommend it to most people. It is just plain psychologically disturbing, yet I couldn't turn it off. What a trip. It's probably the most actually terrifying movie I've seen in my lifetime. Fun for the whole family!

2) I love Chocolat. It is, indeed a beautifully made film with rich colors and lighting.

3) The English Patient began our love affair with Juliette Binoche, as well as Kristin Scot Thomas and Ralph Fiennes (sp?). And Chocolat is one of my favs of all time. I won't put Funny Games on MY list!

4) We saw all three Red, White and Blue movies several years ago. I can only remember that they were beautiful, cinematographically, but I can't remember the stories!

6) I have not seen that version. I read that the US version is a shot-for-shot remake with only different locations and actors. I'd love to see the Austrian version for comparison.
