Fire in Springfield
I was driving around at lunch on Thursday when I saw a large plume of black smoke coming from somewhere in the city. Having the video camera in the car, I felt obligated to at least check it out. The smoke ended up being much farther away than I anticipated -- all the way to the airport (directly north of it). I showed up just as the last of a few structures were being engulfed in flames. It was pretty spectacular. I didn't take the time to interview anyone or ask questions, but the neighbors seemed to be in good spirits, so hopefully nobody was injured.

Wow, I'm constantly amazed by the amount of effort you put into the smallest endeavors. Great movie. The intro was sweet.
I'm even more amazed that you manage to spend time with your family too. I think if I did the amount you manage to cram into a day, I'd be in daily trouble with the missus.
Good going dude.

Is that Gus Gordon's head popping up during the opening? He used to be my next door neighbor.

Is it just me or does it seem like the firefighters are using the water more for your video's effects and less for trying to put out the fire?

My dad is a firefighter and he says that those trailers are pretty impossible to save when the fire is sizeable, so they tend to focus on preventing the fire from spreading to trees, power lines, etc.

Cool video Dave!

Beautiful footage of a sad event. Glad you were at the ready to capture it. I guess you don't see many billows of smoke around Springfield. We see them around here and think nothing of them.

I really loved the intro, possibly even more so than the video itself. Really nice work dude!

Love the music, totally cool.

This was a training fire... The firefighters were just trying to keep the trees from catching on fire. After they used it for numerous training fires they eventually let the whole house and nearby trailers that were all donated to the City to use for this purpose burn all the way down to the ground. The owner of the house and trailers and property is then able to write the donated house off on his/her taxes and is responsible for cleaning up after the fire.
Usually people have dilapidated homes that are worth nothing if they tried to sell them, so they donate them for the tax purposes and come out ahead. Very cool footage, but no need to worry. Just a dilapidated house north of the airport.

Awesome - thanks for the note Patrick! I looked in Police Beat and didn't see anything, so I figured it wasn't anything serious. That's interesting. Maybe I could donate my 2-story house for testing purposes. Just don't tell my insurance company about it! We'd like a small ranch house. Ok thanks.

I forwarded that to Pat, I knew he would have insight on it. I never knew about the donating of property though, hell, I have a rental that I just want to be done with...I now see a new option lol!

Hey who knows Dave, maybe we can get you some work with City doing some footage for training etc. :)

I dont know anything about firefighting, but im sure that if a "mobile home' catches fire, then by the time a fire truck gets there, its done for.

And by they way.... YAY for the glasses-wearing, martini-carrying elephant.

Ericka - if you ever hear of another training like this (or anyone else does), let me know. I'd love to head out and grab some video. Good times!

Was that one of Bubba's trailers? Had the Latinos moved out before they burned it? Was this burn as a part of the Springfield Beautification Effort?
BeanCounter37   Friday, March 27, 2009
Awesome intro!
SallyPants   Friday, March 27, 2009
No, Bean, 'round here we usually leave the Latinos in the trailers when we burn them, because you know, those are the only race that live in mobile homes. You can't really be serious?

Will do.

You can definitely tell it's a training fire when the firefighters are sitting there watching!
My dad just happens to be Batallion chief at Engine 1 downtown, so he knows alot about training fires.

Hey Mr. Heinzel its nathan...do you have any video cameras you are just dying to get rid of???? Cause if so I want one.
obamajr   Friday, March 27, 2009
I'm glad to hear it was a training fire, cause the little refreshment table with the igloo cooler and chairs set up was bothering me. Great video Dave! How do you always find such good songs for your clips?
Ames   Friday, March 27, 2009
Great video, Dave! I have been in Oregon too long. I kept feeling sorry for that poor tree dealing with all that heat and fire right beside it. It does explain the laissez-faire attitude of the firemen. I watched a couple of minutes this AM and had to stop and leave for work and what struck me was the casual way they seemed to be fighting it or dealing with it. Now, that makes sense. I really enjoyed it and the music as well--very well structured!!

Hey Dave good to see you are still amazing with a camara, I really enjoyed the show.
Jessi Trees   Saturday, March 28, 2009
As always, Dave, you're videography is AWESOME!! BTW, does Gus know he's featured in the intro??? I can let him know, if you'd like. I'm sure he'd appreciate the royalties! ;)

I love that we see Gus Gordon pop out. You'll definitely have to use Ken Gilmore's cut out in your next one.
