Installing Laminate Flooring
Steve and I went to the Film Club building last night to install laminate flooring for our set. The 2-hour process has been condensed into an 80-second video for your amusement. Enjoy!

1) I forgot to mention that the music is a track I made a month ago at home using my kids' instruments and some miscellaneous things around the house.

2) That was great--loved the music. Love that speed too. If I could put down a floor that fast it would be worth it to make all my floors hardwood (I'd probably want something other than cardboard under them). What happens to all of the materials like the floor when you tear this down? Or will it be kept long-term for film club (no, not looking for a craigslist deal--just curious).

Fun to watch the work!

3) Nice, I'll have to go and trample on it now.
Actually I'll bring the dog over to leave muddy pawprints.

5) We're thinking of doing a laminate floor for our booth at a wedding show we're doing in April, but we've never laid it before in our lives! We only have a 2.5 hour setup time frame, so Bill is skeptical that he can get it done...how hard is it, Dave?

7) Nice work! Looks really nice. I love the music.

Did the school pay for the materials or were you able to get someone to donate them?

8) Angi - how many square feet are you dealing with? I would imagine one thing you'll want to pay attention to is the edge of your flooring area. Laminate has grooves to enable the pieces to snap together, but if you have an exposed edge, it would probably be a good idea to run a saw down the board to cut off the groove, leaving a nice smooth edge (which you can sand to eliminate the hard edge). In terms of snapping together quickly, it's not a problem. But you also probably want an underlayment of some sort. Laminate laid directly onto concrete or a hard surface will usually be loud to walk on because small particles usually prevent the floor from sitting perfectly flat.

So if you know the size you need, you can lay it all out at home, then pack it up and take the underlayment and floor with you. I would imagine that you could assemble a 100-square foot section in about 30-45 minutes as long as everything is already cut to size and what not.

Denny - the school doesn't help us financially. We blew our budget for this project (we had money from previous Premiere Nights), but Steve and I covered the costs of going over. We will be making the Film Club students mow our lawns this summer for reimbursement.

10) Dave - we have an 8 x 10 booth space (10 feet wide by 8 feet deep), so these "grooves" you speak of...if we lay that floor from from left-to-right kinda' horizontally (if looking at the booth), will those "grooves" be exposed to our visitors coming in, then? Also, once we get it laid down & snapped together, how difficult is it to "unsnap?" And what did you and Steve use for underlayment, if I may ask?

Also remember: Bill and I are NOT home improvement "buffs"...we'd like to be, but are not that coordinated, frankly. We have a friend who is willing to help us that morning, and we're hoping to lay the floor out on our driveway once or twice before the event, just to see how it pans out.

And now you're in trouble with your wife.

12) YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!! Our house looks so pretty! So you got all the painting done as well? Was there any left after our *ahem* "artistic break"? :) And thank you Courtney for being on the Students side! I'm not looking forward to a summer of mowing lawns! (Especially since our lawn mower is either extremely heavy or I am just weak!) Looks great though! Everyone's hard work paid off! Can't wait to see it tonight!
