It's an All Day/All Night Thing

Morning Sickness. Though with me, it's constant sickness. Thankfully I'm only nauseous, nothing more than that (trying not to get graphic), but it's really making life difficult. I feel fine if I'm lying down, though that's not an option when you have a 3 1/2 year old who needs your attention.

Food aversions and cravings have already started. I can't so much as look at raw meat, so I'm not cooking it at all. Up until last week I could still eat meat if it was prepared (a Lean Cuisine or fast food) but within the last couple of days that has all changed--I don't want meat in any way, shape or form. I was the same way when I was pregnant with Lilly, though I did get my taste for hamburgers back late in my 2nd trimester (but even then I could only stomach hamburgers from Burger King). The only things I want to eat are carbs...crackers, noodles, popcorn...and cucumbers. Specifically cucumbers with sour cream and vinegar. I kind of want eggs, but only from a restaurant, like Denny's or IHOP. I can't bring myself to prepare them here.

I'm really sensitive to smells too. Which (being frank here) is awful when you live in a house full of farters. Between Lilly, Charlie and Emmy, this house is polluted 24 hours a day. The Vicks in my bedside drawer has been working over time for the past few weeks. Charlie eats tuna 2-3 times a week and I have to go on the other side of the house while he's eating it...that stench will push me right over the edge.

It's interesting to me that these aversions/cravings pretty much mimic my pregnancy with Lilly, though they started a lot earlier this time around. I'm only 8 weeks in (based on my calculations). I'm really hoping I'll start to feel better at the 12 week mark as I did with Lilly.

In other news, my first OB appointment is on Friday. I'm really looking forward to it and hoping I'll be able to hear a good, strong heartbeat!

1) This is my first pregnancy so I have nothing to compare to, but what you're describing is pretty much what I've been going through too. My "morning sickness" just seems to change times of day throughout the pregnancy. For a few weeks it was as soon as I got up, few weeks it was mid-morning. We've now settled into the dinnertime/suddenly and without warning time. And I'm not always just nauseus (also trying not to be graphic).
Smells have been hard for me. Jim usually likes to make himself breakfast and cooks up something to take for lunch in the morning also. Sometimes I can't come downstairs while he's cooking whatever it is(usually sausage or chicken). Right before I leave for work I feed our pug. The smell of his food gets to me like never before. One morning it had a VERY instant effect.
I'm at 35 weeks and still dealing with very random nausea. :-P
Good luck at your OB appointment. Hope everything is going great!

2) Yeah, I had what one of my husband's Indian co-workers referred to as "all dee time seekness" with my second, Gwendolyn; with Galvin things calmed down by my second trimester. And it makes sense that it would subside while at rest since it's comparable to motion sickness. My OB told me to keep something in my stomach at all times, which was easier said than done. However, I did find ginger helpful (in many different forms, including ginger snaps), as well as lemon drops. Oh and the only thing I really craved during pregnancy was fish/seafood, and I thought that was a bit odd, but I'm with you on a lot of the smells.

Good luck!

Ames-you are really getting close. Its amazing what holding that little baby will do to your memory and the bad stuff will fade.
I'll let my daughter Laurie, comment on the worse pregnancy ever-but even she will tell you its all worth it when she is holding her beautiful baby ,Charlotte.

5) Sending best wishes for an end to morning sickness. It's an all over bad feeling! I remember the smells that got to me so bad. One was broccolli being cooked. Blech! Maybe a clothespin for your nose. Too funny about all the farters in your house. LOL

6) I,too, had food aversions. I couldn't deal with meat too. I still gets to me and I am 7 weeks postpartum. I had a difficult pregnancy without complications (if that makes sense). two stints of bed-rest and then PUPPs after Jack was born. This is very rare but it happened to me. My husband was transferred 140 miles away for the first six months of my pregnancy so I didn't have to deal with cooking during the week (I ate alot of pre-made meals, cooked vegetables and ate in the cafeteria at lunch) but I did have to feed the dog and I remember the smell (GROSS). I feel for ya...and have not forgotten all of the gross stuff your body does during pregnancy. Although I DO LOVE holding my son! BTW: too funny about the farters, my son, dog and husband serenaded me the other day in unison! LOL
