Sniffing to Save a Dollar

My dad will do just about anything to save a dollar. He is one of the most frugal people I have ever known and the lengths he goes to sometimes to save a few dollars amazes me.

Since my parents bought the beach house my dad has been "bumming" wireless from another house nearby. The router is called TideRisen. For some reason today TideRisen disappeared and hasn't been back online since.

Tonight we set out with my iPhone (and eventually my dad's laptop) to find more open routers within close range. I took a few photos of my dad going to the extreme with his laptop to find his next beloved wireless router.

I also found a few open routers with my iPhone that we'll probably end up using soon. We just need to buy an extender like the Cantenna to get the job done.

Here is my dad preparing his laptop on the hood of his car.

A close up of the routers within range.

I also found a few open routers including Betty, she was open too and sitting right next to Bedrock Motorola.

We found a few we can probably extend out to so the next step is to get an extender and sniff some wireless. Pretty fun even if my dad is a cheap skate.

1) That reminds me of when I went on vacation to Colorado with my parents. My dad was doing the same thing! :)

I can't believe how many people have unsecured networks.

3) Roger steals someone's wireless in the condo building. We can only sit in certain places if we want a signal! Sounds just like Dennis.

4) This story reminds me when I had free cable in my first apartment in Glendale Heights. About six months later, I was watching the ESPN Wednesday Doubleheader. Suddenly, snow. Damn! It was time to finally subscribe.

5) He can also go and park up at one of those motels that advertise free wireless. Or, many hospitals now have free wireless.

6) I think this is why Matt named our router "This Ain't Free"

8) I stepped out last night to empty the trash, and noticed a light in the air in front of our only friend on the island. It was Dennis holding his laptop in a prone position to "catch" the signial. I would have loved to hear the explantion he would have had if the cops had stopped.. Denny said they were out last night, too. I am really glad hs is "frrgal", that way, I get to be the BIG SPENDER!

9) I used to "borrow" wireless from my neighbors when I lived with my parents. My mom was always so worried that I would get in trouble. She kept calling it stealing. I think if they don't secure it, then it's their own darned faults.

10) Good for you, Dennis! I agree with Mrs.Shoo, if it's not secured, go for it!!
