Logo Feedback
It's Friday afternoon and I'd imagine most people are at work looking for ways to make the afternoon go by faster. I'm here to help.

A few weeks ago Niki and I started exploring some ideas around a new business venture. We've expanded on the original idea and have decided to move forward to see if it turns into anything. We're still ironing out the details but have a pretty good idea of what our offering will be and how it's all going to come together. We hope to have everything ready by the middle of June, and the Humzoo community will be the first to know about it.

We're now at the point where we need some feedback. I've been working on several logo concepts for the business and if you've ever created a logo you know that it can be a tedious difficult process. Finding an image or combination of images that best represents your products and services requires many attempts and some good candid feedback along the way.

Without giving away to many details, we're planning to offer a service that allows people to create personalized items from creativity that originates in your home, in an eco-friendly way. People of all ages come up with some great art, whether it be something poetic, a drawing, a painting, a photograph, etc. It happens daily and people should be proud to share it. We want to help! More details to follow soon but first we need your help.

We have chosen the name Recycled Nest for our company and we've purchased the domain name recyclednest.com. We're very excited about the name because it really does represent what we want to offer and finding a domain name that isn't already taken isn't easy these days. I also think the name itself leaves a lot of room for a really fun brand.

Niki and I brainstormed possible logo ideas before I started drawing the logos, and it's noteworthy that I am not the greatest illustrator. Here is what we came up with.

- Recycle symbol (those little arrow things), maybe incorporated into a nest somehow
- Just a nest
- A nest of eggs
- Use of birds (Niki likes birds for some reason)
- A nest made of commonly recycled items (torn off notebook paper, magazine, soda can)
- A nest with something growing out of it (representing creativity)

On and off for the last week or so I've been working on some logo concepts for the brand. I want to keep the logo simple, something easily printable. I want it to be a fun logo that I can eventually create a theme around. I've come up with 10 different logos. Some using texture and photos, which admitted will complicate things when it comes to printing it. But I included them anyway. So here they are in all their glory.

We're interested in your candid feedback. Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite ones listed by number, all 10 ranked or better yet some details around which ones you liked and why (and the ones you didn't like and why). Thanks so much!

1) I'm digging #s 9 and 10 - I was actually drawn to #10 at first, but I don't know if I would've "gotten it" so quickly had I not seen the previous four examples...maybe if it had some of the nest sticking out around the edges of the newpaper print, kinda' like #9? I don't know, but I like it.

2) # 9 works for me...

3) I'm drawn to #4 probably because I'm in Oregon and we just think about plants first. LOL I'm not sure it is the best for the idea--since it indicates more about gardening to me than creativity. I agree on 9 and 10 being the best to indicate nesting, recycling and creativity. I zoomed up and I still can't tell-what is the red thing on #2? I like Niki's birds but I'm not sure birds indicate much to me about creativity--though they definitely define nests. :)

4) #4. A little concerned about the problem that the bird has in #2.

5) Hey Denny,
Just keep in mind simplicity, scalability, how it looks in Black & White, and work with your topography. Sometimes the name itself (the letters) will help you make the mark/brand. I lean towards the top ones with the bird and vine because I think they might work better in different mediums. I do like the nest though I'm worried it wouldn't read well in some publications. All of these could be used as iconography/elements for the website.

6) Or you could change #6 up and instead of the brown straw part of the nest, you could do the recycled look like the eggs in #9.

7) I like number 2 but I don't like the stuff stuck on the side of the nest. Could the stuff be inside the nest?

Do it.

10) It's interesting that the majority have chosen the ones that are less likely to succeed when it comes to multiple mediums. I just threw #9 and #10 in there to see how they compared to the others.

#4 and #8 are probably the most versatile of the group and I could even scale those colors down if necessary. I think those are my personal favorites because I know they are going to work best in most cases. This logo needs to be able to print not only on the web but also business cards, paper, fabric and potentially a Super Bowl ad on TV. So it's gotta be a flexible logo.

Spike, I plan to work on the type next. I have some ideas and I plan to keep it very simple. The logo is by no means finalized and I'm still not sure which one we'll go with, if any of these. I plan to keep working on them and seeing if other things come from them in the next week or so.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback and welcome more if anyone out there hasn't chimed in yet. Thanks everyone, checks are in the mail.

11) HA...guess it wasn't just my Oregon nature that picked #4. :)

12) I second Spike's comments. Not that this is the law, but when I design logos, I start with black and white only. The overall shape is extremely important, and it's way too easy to get bogged down in details while the overall logo has fundamental flaws. The logo should not have to rely on more than one color, and the shape should be simple and easy to see at a very quick glance. If I have to study it or look closer to figure out what something is, that is not necessarily a good thing.

The only ones above that could fall into these guidelines are 4 and 5, although the visual of a plant might give the wrong impression about your business.

I wish I had better advice, but I've always had a hard time with logos. I don't know how we ever came up with the Humzoo logo, but I still like it.

13) What if the leaves on the plant in #4 are eggs to establish more the nest and less the plant but something growing and nurturing? Maybe the eggs that are newsprint or something else that would less color and more art in nature?

14) I sort of agree with Dave. I just read the comments first without looking at the logos. The image that first came to me was something based off the traditional "Recycle" logo. With 3 arrows forming a circle. ( or triangle...thanks Lionheart hehe)

But I like your general idea. Good Luck

15) I like #6 but make a recycle triangle out of nest twigs to put around it.

16) I agree with Lionheart, especially about attempting to incorporate the 3 arrows more.

18) Thanks everyone! Just the feedback I was looking for. I've got some ideas on the current logos and also a possible new one. I'll report back in a few days.

19) I like #5. When I see the twiggy ones I think organic and natural. I just don't get the nests. But again I'm going on 4-5 hours of sleep so what do I know?

20) BeanCounter37 really likes #9 because if you are recycling items that would usually come from an office, the coloration of the eggs reflect the reycled items.

21) Denny, my first thought was to use the nest, yet have the recycle symbol as the eggs. Something like that. Love the idea.

24) Denny - what if you simplified the nest more - i liked where you were going with the bird in the nest, what if you made the nest more like just a half circle, had some white space between the top of the nest and bottom of the bird and made the bird more flat on the bottom and turned it into more a fat round bird? You have probably already finished it up this weekend! Hope all is well with you guys.
