A Blast From The Past
This morning my mom sent me an email that I had sent to her on August 2, 2005. Why she was digging that far back in her email I don't know, but I must admit it was amusing to read. I figured it might be worth sharing.

A little heads up for those who don't know me personally. I research everything extensively. I don't buy or own anything that I haven't spent lots of time weighing my options on. Dogs are no exception.

Hey mom,
I hope you are doing well. What a week, only Tuesday and I am ready for it to
be over already.

Thought I would fill you in. I have given it a lot of thought and have been
researching (you know me) for quite a while. I am thinking about getting Niki
a puppy for her birthday. The breed we have decided on is the Dachshund breed.
More specifically the miniatures. They are a very intelligent and loving breed
of dogs. One of my colleagues, Alex and his wife have two of them, and at their
house is where Niki first fell in love with the breed. They are really cute
dogs and a size that I think is both managable and enjoyable. I have been
extremely apprehensive about getting an inside dog of any type for so long but
I have read several books and tons of web sites that really put my mind at
ease. Honestly it all boils down to the time and effort you put into training
the dogs in the beginning.

I have been in contact with a few breeders and the one I like the best is
located in Lexington, SC. They have the exact dog that I want and sent some
great pictures. I would like a red, smooth haired male miniature dachshund.
The males are more down to earth typically.

Her birthday is a month away but its hard to time the availablility of a puppy
with her birthday so I may go ahead and visit this one this coming weekend. It
is 9 weeks old and ready for a home. I have spoken with about 10 different
breeders in NC and SC and most red dapples will not be ready until this winter.
If I am not happy with the personality and obedience of this puppy there is one
very similar in Kannapolis that is 8 weeks old.

Anyway, pretty nerve-racking and exciting all at once. I hope this will be a
good experience for us, and for our house. ;)

I'd love to know your thoughts! Am I crazy? Niki would really love a puppy and
I think she is ready to care for one. Her maternal clock is flapping in the
wind. ;)

BTW, this is a surprise, she has no idea so don't mention anything to anyone,
especially Tyler.

Love you!
d

In summary, Beck is the result of this endeavor and this was the start of our family. He's a maniac, and frankly no amount of research could have told us that. Not even the New Skeet Monks obedience test I performed on him the day we picked him out.

Thanks for sharing, Mom.

1) I'm a cyber-pack rat of sorts. I save emails and useless crap forever. I read old emails from time to time, it's fun to remember what was going on then. Unfortunately some animals break the mold, and their character cannot be determined by any test. Like my old room mates cat. At a glance she would appear to be a fluffy loving cat. When you would go to pet her she would flop back and want to pet her belly...meanwhile hissing like she's going to attack you. You could also catch her walking through the hall hissing for no apparent reason. Total Maniac!

2) "and I think she's ready to care for one." Wow, what confidence you have in yoru wife there Denny! We have friends who put off having a child for a few years and everytime her "clock" started to tick they got another animal. In the end they had several birds, 3 dogs and 3 tanks of fish; there would have been cats but she's allergic. Sounds like Beck was a great start to a great family!

3) Ashley, you should have seen Niki the day that I told her we were going to get a puppy. She near panicked and after we brought the dog home and had him for a few days she cried and said we had made a big mistake. That's where the "and I think she's ready to care for one." part comes from. As you know, you get a dog and your life changes.

4) I fully understand, just giving you crap. I was that way for about a week and a half after getting Scooter. I kept saying, "I just don't know about this". Now he's my dog. He looks to me for confirmation when Richie tries to take him outside or to bed. I told Richie that I forgot what life was like pre-Scooter--pretty boring really. :-) I can only imagine having a child. Whoa!

5) I did have post partum depression after getting Beck. I guess it helped me prepare for Emmet and then Dylan, because I did much better after Beck.

6) I was afraid to use that term in reference to a dog, thanks for being bold enough to call it what it was!

7) Niki, I thought we classified it as post pooch-um depression?
