Sore Losers

The other night Erica and I watched the women's team all around gymnastics competition. We loved it. What those girls (most are under 18) can do is amazing. I swear my butt cheeks clinch every time they perform a pass on the floor exercise and when they vault off those spring boards. Scary! Anyway, it was disappointing that we received the Silver Medal, but that's pretty good to be 2nd in the world. Not to the USA, we have to be the best in everything and if we're not, we'll find an excuse as to why we lost the event. The past couple of days the news stations have been saying that the Chinese gymnasts are underage even though their passports and official documents say that they're fine. Why wasn't this looked into before the games began? Why can't we lose with grace? The whole thing is silly to me.

1) It is crazy to whine about it.... it seems like we would be at an advantage to have older more experianced gymnists. Although, the Chinese Girls look very young...

2) Interesting article all over the news today about just that. And who's to say the Chinese government didn't forge their passports, all in the name of more gold medals??

3) Younger female gymnasts are at a greater advantage. They have less fear and less body mass to haul around. And in China, they start rigorous training at a very young age. A body can only put up with that sort of training for so long. This isn't the first time we've accused China of lying about gymnast's age during the Olympics. A Chinese girl competed back in 2000 (I think) and later revealed in an interview that she was underage at the time. I'm with Bela Karolyi, I think removing the age limit (which is sort of newish) would be a better answer. Age 16 is almost old for gymnasts anyway. Although, Germany had a 33 year old competing for them. But that's just friggin crazy.

5) I agree, Courtney, remove the age limits. I just worry about the girls. The Chinese girls look like 10 to 12 year olds. I know they are much smaller than Americans, in general, but starting at such a young age and training so intensely messes up hormones - basically shuts them down. Can't be good - for anyone. Seems to be the current human condition regarding everything - win at all costs.

6) Are we all staying up for the Individual Women's All Around tonight? This week is killing me. I like to go to bed at 8pm or 9pm. I have trouble holding my eyes open at 11pm. But I'm stubborn and I really want to see this competition. Who do YOU think will win? I'm going bet on Shawn for Gold and Nastia for silver.
