So what are you going to be?

We've gotten two costume catalogs in the mail recently, and it's all Gareth talks about. So, of course, Jonas has picked up on it too. Never too early for Halloween. At first they both wanted to be Transformers. But they had very specific Transformers that they wanted to be, and they were not Optimus Prime or BumbleBee (which are the only Transformer costumes I can find, and no, I'm not going to make one). So they've decided against. Most recently, the choice for both seems to be Batman. Gareth did waver toward werewolf at one point, but seems to be back at Batman. Of course, there's no way I'm buying a costume this early only to have them change their minds in two weeks (or two days). But Jonas does LOVE to dress up, so I am considering looking for a cheap one (or making something) that I can buy sooner rather than later.

1) Get a pair of tight, black sweats and a black t-shirt and somehow make the batman logo on the shirt. That would make an easy, inexpensive batman costume for dress-up play.

2) I look for costumes at yard sales because the grands love to play with them. One day Caroline decided she was going to be Elmo all day so we went to MacDonalds and Target with Elmo. It was worth it to see the smiles! I greew up the oldest of 5 and so Mom always made our costumes. The most unique was when my sister and I were potatoes. She took a brown paper cleaner bag and drew in dimples like a potato A little strange but we thought it was great!

3) On time my oldest daughter had the job of taking the youngest (now 14) trick or treating. Being the good sport she is, when younger girl dressed up like a cat for Halloween, she dress all in black with a mask and carried a bag with a stuffed cat in it and she was a "Cat Burglar" I loved that idea!

4) I actually have the Native American Indian costume that my husband wore on Halloween 1972, so if it fits, that's what Galvin will be--last year, he was a firefighter and not a happy one...two-year molars...*sigh* Gwendolyn was a chicken last year--so cute--but I'm not sure what she'll be this year. Perhaps a cow? We'll see.

Wait a darn minute!! It's WAY too early to be thinking about Halloween!!! ARG!!!! Oooooo...how about a pirate??!

6) I love Halloween. I hate that the decorations and things are for sale in the stores already. But I will admit I've been giving my costume for this year some serious thought. Since I will be 8 months pregnant, it has been limiting my selection some.

8) Totally brings up the merchandising for holidays. Halloween in August, Christmas in October, Valentine's Day in January. Easter in...what February? It's very annoying. I worked retail for 20 years. I know Christmas books start arriving in August but who says you have to put them out 3 mos. early? It really removes the serendipity of the season. Nothing wrong with planning Halloween costumes or buying Christmas presents in August--but do we have to get hit with the merchandising that soon?

9) Have you looked on Ebay? You might find some used costumes, maybe even some unusual hand made ones. I agree though, the boys may change their minds by Oct.
