hike - Ox Road Trail
I decided to take the boys for a hike on Sunday. See all pics here: http://www.humzoo.com/girlcarew/photos/34/1/ . I was also taking care of the daughter of a friend. Azula is 3, like Jonas. I looked for a hike that was close, but in the redwoods, and obviously not too long since the kiddos are quite young. I found what I thought might be an easy trail. Although it was 3/4 mile one way (so 1.5 miles round trip), I figured we could turn around at any point.

Soon after the first downhill, we came upon some railroad tracks that we walked along side of for a little while. We kept hearing the train whistle for the Roaring Camp Train, but we couldn't tell which way it was coming from, or even if it would come on these specific tracks.

As we were walking, the river was on one side, but down a very steep embankment.

Gareth desperately wanted to get to the river. I was not motivated partly because I did not have extra clothes if they got wet and I did not have sunscreen. So I kept reminding him that we might not find a way that we could all go down. But a passing hiker assured us there was an easier way just up ahead. Well, it was easier, but not easy-peasy-pie (as the boys like to say).
We got to the river. There weren't too many other people there when we got there. But by the time we left there was a group of high school/college kids that were there to drink and get rowdy. I was more than ready to leave. I had to coax the kids a lot. I did manage to let them take off their socks and shoes and get their feet wet. But we stayed for less than half an hour. I told Gareth we'd come back, and I think we should.

I was most surprised at how little complaining there was on the way back. There was a lot of up hill. They really only didn't like it at the very end (slash beginning) where it was steepest. In all, I enjoyed it, and I was thoroughly impressed overall by the kids.

1) They look so cute with their backpacks. I think its great that you are taking advantage of all the interesting places around you. So many times we fail to recognize and take advantage of things in our own neighborhood.
2) The benefit of trying to save money!! We were going to go to San Diego this summer but decided against it to save money. We have a ton of great stuff around here to do.
3) Yeah hiking! I'm impressed that they did so well. You are going to have some nature loving kids. Before you know it you'll be struggling to keep up with them! Good job super mom!
4) I think the economy may do more for local events and interesting places than any advertising. I heard a report about how much each state had dropped in fuel usage and travel but some states were dramatic (like CA). Sometimes it takes adversity or struggle to make us smarter and more creative. Great use of your local parks and resources!
