mother's intuition

Okay... stop now if you don't want to read about potential poop.

This may be TMI, but I just had to write it down. Gareth likes to hold his poop in as long as he can. He just doesn't want to stop playing. Now, he's six, so he doesn't have accidents, but I can tell it gets close sometimes. Like today, after he got home from school I could *totally* tell by the way he was standing that he had to poop. I just knew. I told him to go try, he tried to get out of going, but after a little more prompting he finally went to the bathroom. And lo and behold, out it came.

What I find most funny is that I am the only one that can tell he needs to go. Isaiah (dad) can't tell. And of course I wouldn't expect anyone else to. But it is SO obvious to me when he needs to. What a great skill I've learned as a mother.

3) Well, I need you at my house then. Bubba suffered through constipation all of his toddler life (I say that like it is decades or something lol). He will be six in November and he still holds it in. He usually doesn't go full force but there are tracks in his drawers more often than not.

Well just yesterday, his Paw-Paw took him off the bus and brought him in the house. He was too busy doing other things that he did not notice the smell. Well, Bubba's aunt walked by and asked him if he had to go to the bathroom. He said no. Then she asked if he already went. He said yes. It was sticking out of his butt because lo and behold, he was still trying to hold it.

I am fed up with it at this point. Every year, starting on his third birthday, I have said that this is the year he will quit. Well, here's hoping that six is the magic number.

We have tried doing everything from making him go at scheduled times (which I am not sure anyone can really do) to giving him shots of mineral oil in his drinks in order to ensure that it doesn't hurt coming out. These are the only thing the Dr. has recommended. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

4) Ericka.... I have NO suggestions. I got lucky with Gareth. Jonas is 3 and we are having issues that I worry will be long term. In a dipe he pooped at least once a day. Now in undies, it's every three, and we give him an oral laxative (a chewable tablet)... well, we have the past week or so. l am so worried he just won't get it.
I'm sorry I can't help you. Gareth is just a good pooper. I can't make him poop; I can only tell when he needs to. Jonas is another story. I may be in your shoes in three years. Have you tried asking another doc?

5) I think the "holding it" gets to be a habit and can also be a control thing. There aren't too many things these little guys have complete control of. They think they can control their bodies this way. For Cami, it began when she didn't drink enough and became constipated and it hurt terribly. Once things softened up, she stopped trying to keep it from coming out.

Good luck to you. Toilet troubles are maddening!

6) I am lucky that Jonas eats a TON of fruits. Day before yesterday he had nearly a pint of blueberries and yesterday a bunch of watermelon. So even though he holds it (and I do think it's partly a control issue), at least it doesn't hurt coming out. That is one thing I want to prevent if at all possible.
