dirty love

Gardening is dirty. I have gloves. I often forget to put them on. I don't mind dirty fingers though.

I have discovered succulents. I love them I adore them. I planted some in the backyard, but I neglected to take pics. I also planted some in the big pot on our porch. The pot contains and obviously neglected Japanese maple. I am hoping that now that I have a dedicated water source going to it that I'll actually remember to turn the water on.

I also love love love California poppies. I'm not sure why. Isaiah says that some people consider them weeds. They can be hard to get rid of. But I love them. So we agreed that I could put some by the mail box. I hope they are hardy because that is some seriously clay-ish "soil".

And my veggies. The whole box:

From right to left (sorry, going backwards) lettuces, italian parsley, and broccoli.

then Napa cabbage, a bit of basil, cauliflower, and red cabbage.

Those plants (above) I all got as seedlings. So the plants had already been started and were growing. But the plants below I started from seeds. I am a little more proud of these... as if I had anything really to do with them. Front to back, cucumber, carrot, peas, and radishes.

I'm not sure that the cucumber and carrots will do anything; it might be too late in the year. But radishes and possibly peas are supposed to do well.

Carrot and pea sprouts:

I also have a ton of bulbs to plant. Most everything I read says to plant any time between now and December. That's quite a window, I say! But maybe if I plant a few a week then they'll come up staggered in the spring. I can't wait. I also love tulips and daffodils.

What a love-filled post!

1) California poppies are so pretty. They're like little flames.

2) I love dirt too. I sit at work at my computer and think about dirt all day. I went to a plant class last weekend and that just gave me more lust for dirt. I think I have a problem.

3) If everyone would just dig in the dirt once in awhile we might have world peace - or peas at least.

4) Yes Pegi! Or at least they could afford their peas. No coupons needed for your backyard garden.

5) I like getting dirty, sweating and mud caked fingernails-Sarah I'll take credit for your dirt thing:> I need to put up some pictures of the "wild" flowers that I planted in the dirt that was fertilized by Lola the pig. I think they are at least 8 feeet tall.

6) Looks great! You're lucky to have a longer growing season. We're starting to get frost. (Sigh.)

I never remember my gloves either. I love dirt!

7) Pegii, how dare you and Bob grow home grown vegetables when you taking income away from the produce farmers in Western NC. There are many fresh vegetables grown in Western,NC,especially in the Waynesville area. These farmers grow vegetables on contract for people like Gerber Baby Food.

8) Just remember what we have been told: Each of us will eat a pound of dirt in our life time. Have fun digging in your dirt.

9) Excuse me, what the f#ck are you talking about?! So now it's unpatriotic (in your insane mind) to grow our own vegetables?!

BeanO, it would be so nice if you would only comment if you actually had something to say that meant ANYTHING. Anything at all.
