a good day
So, today was Gareth's actual birthday. It started out a bit shaky. He *really* wanted a party today. Today. He was bummed when we tried to explain that that was what the party over the weekend was for. But, we told him he could choose dinner. Eat in or out, where ever he wanted. And my little homebody chose to eat in. And eat quiche. I love that he loves quiche. Anyway... Jonas and I dropped Gareth off at school at 9. Then we went to music class. Then to Trader Joes to get cookies. Then back to Gareth's school to be there for birthday circle (and lunch and play).
Let me talk a moment about Gareth's school. He is doing Kindergarten at the same place he did preschool. He'll start "regular" school next year. But his preschool is a Montessori preschool that does just ages 3-6. Not many kids stay for the third year (which is K), but some do. It has been the best thing for Gareth. The school is called Common Threads. And if you ask the kids what they are messengers of, they will all reply (without hesitation), "Loving Kindness". it might sound corny, but it works. This school has given Gareth not only loving kindness but also confidence and acceptance. Today at his birthday circle, each other child has an opportunity to say something about the birthday child. Not quite everyone spoke up, but about 95% of them did and each person said either, "I love you." or "I hope you have great birthday." or some variant or combination. Two of the teachers also said something, and they both nearly broke down in tears. They know that this is Gareth's last birthday circle. The only reason they managed to hold it together is that they know that since Jonas will start at this school over the summer, they will still get to see Gareth. They love him so much. It was truly a heartwarming experience.
After that, I took Jonas home to nap. Then we picked up Gareth and headed to the boardwalk for miniature golf, or putt putt as I call it. We played 18 holes (see the pics) and then played some games. It was, all in all, a great day.

1) I really enjoy reading about your family. We have 5 grands and one on the way and each one is very precious to us. (Ages 16,6,6,and boy girl twins that are 3) Being a grandma (they call me Reera) is my reward for raising 3 teenaagers. My 6 year old grandson looks and acts so much like his daddy that sometimes I feel like I am having flashbacks. I love Montessori and wish my grands could attend one. Gavin (3 year old twin) was just over 3lbs at birth and has some sensory issues that I think would benefit from the tactile learning in Montessori in addition to the general philosphy.I know that when you are in the thick of things, being a parent can be exhausting but I am sure you will agree its the best of life.
2) I love Montessori too. I wish we could afford it for all of school. And yes, parenting is exhausting. I know it's cliche, but really, it is truly the hardest job I've ever had. I never, *never* thought i'd be at home full time with them. I have my Calgon days, but I try to remind myself that it will go faster than I can imagine.
