a nightIt was kind of a big night for our house tonight. We finally got Gareth's new bed built and the sheets washed and dried and on the bed. So tonight, Gareth slept in his very own room. Obviously, he had his own room when he was the only child. But I think Jonas was less than 18 months old (and maybe younger, not sure) when they started sharing a room. But over the past 9 months or so, it became apparent that Gareth would really benefit from having his own space.
So, first, Isaiah moved his office from that room into our walk in closet. Thankfully we had other stand-alone wardrobes where we could put our clothes. And the closet has a (small) window. Then I had to move my crap out of the room. That took a lot longer. In fact, it's still going on. Partly because we don't have my new sewing area set up. Partly because I just need to move more stuff down to the garage. And partly just because I'm slow.
But last Thursday Isaiah and Gareth went to IKEA. They picked out and bought a bed and night stand. They also picked out a desk for Gareth, but didn't have room to get it. We'll go back in the next week or two to get that (and hopefully my sewing stuff too).
The bed is quite comfy and Gareth seems to really like it. The biggest thing, though, is that I will no longer be able to hear him on the monitor. I know it seems odd that he's 7 and we could still hear him on the monitor, but it was more for Jonas. Neither of my boys are the kind that get up out of bed on their own. They tend to just call and wait for me to come in. I think that is partly due to the fact that they don't have a nightlight. We never used one because it either kept them awake or woke them up early. They sleep best in total darkness. They've rarely been "afraid of the dark". In fact, when we had a sleep over here, I forgot that most kids do use a nightlight.
Anyway, tonight I impressed upon Gareth how, if he needed to pee, he should just get up and do it. We don't have a clock for him yet though. So I told him if he wakes up and wonders whether it's time to get up, he should go check the clock in Jonas' room.
The other thing is that I have been wanting to move his bedtime later because he's been getting up too early. So tonight, I was able to put Jonas to sleep first and then do Gareth. It only moved bedtime by about 20 minutes, but it's a start. I gotta find out when the daylight savings change happens. I usually start migrating their sleep about a week in advance in small increments.
So, the other big part of tonight is that when I was putting Jonas to sleep, we read and then cuddled. Then I told him that I had to help get Gareth ready for bed. I told him to cuddle with his stuffed animal and I would be back. But that I wanted him to be restful and try to go to sleep. And he did! Amazing. Usually Jonas wants to cuddle with me all the way until he actually falls asleep. Then I extricate myself. But he didn't protest. And he didn't call for me once I left the room. I'm not so sure he'll be all up for it again tomorrow, but I'm hopeful.
