Podcast JunkieI have had two people recently comment on podcasts. One rattled off a list things she'd learned recently from podcasts. Naturally, I asked her what she listened to. I love to get lists of what other people are listening to. I'm a podcast junkie.
And I love to turn people onto podcasts that I love. And the other person that commented basically said that she didn't yet listen to podcasts. I was amazed. But I have realized that, yes, there are people who don't listen to podcasts.
And I told one of them I would make a list of what I listen to. But I've slacked. Until now!
So, here's my list, with comments. But don't let my comments deter you from trying them. I would recommend that anyone (everyone?) should listen to at least one or two episodes of each, just to check them out.
+ Serial - the most popular podcast ever. If you haven't listened to it, do it. Now. Stop reading and go start the download.
+ Reply All - I learned of this one through the Start Up podcast. I love the hosts. It's billed as "a show about the internet" but don't let that turn you off. The stories are great.
+ Invisibilia - This is a fairly new podcast that is on hiatus after its first season. But it's fantastic!!
+ This American Life - some people say it's too sad. And there have been sad ones But there are also funny ones. And thoughtful ones.
+ Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me - it's billed as a news quiz show. But it's hysterical. Really.
+ Planet Money - I always feel so so so unsmart about financial things. And this podcast isn't so much about personal finance as about the financial world in general. But in an interesting and non-boring way. Sometimes even funny!
+ Stuff You Missed In History Class - If you read on, you'll see I have quite a few history podcasts. Not sure why I like them so much, but I do. Fascinating.
+ Fresh Air - A great all around podcast with interviews with interesting people about interesting stuff. A wide range of topics.
+ The Moth - A fantastic podcast where people tell their stories. Hard to describe, sounds corny, but is amazing. I've gone to a couple of live shows, which I would highly recommend as well.
+ Lexicon Vally - for the former-editor in me, the grammarian, and word lover.
+ Born Yesterday - Another history podcast. I'm not sure when there will be another episode, but all the past episode are great.
+ Here's the Thing - Alec Baldwin interviews a random selection of people. It's pretty good.
+ RadioLab - I tried to get into this one years ago and couldn't. But I have just recently and am really quite enjoying the archives. It's science-y related, but not in a boring technical way. Really interesting stuff.
+ Star Talk - I love Neil de Grasse Tyson. But I go back and forth on this pod casts. Sometimes the joking is too annoying. But the topics are usually great.
+ Start Up - This is one that is currently in hiatus, but the first season was great.
+ Criminal - This one doesn't come out often. And you definitely have to be interested in crime stuff. I found it quite interesting.
+ Strangers - I stumbled across this, I don't remember how. I like the general idea. But I just have a hard time listen to the host. Maybe it's just me. And I hate to judge it based on that. But something about her voice annoys me. But the stories are good.
+ True Story - this is another story telling podcast. Real stories. I quite enjoy hearing people tell their stories.
+ The Memory Palace - another one I've found recently. They don't come out often, but there's a good set in the archive. It's history, but super short. Interesting.
+ BackStory - Okay, this one is my list, but I don't think I've listened to it yet. Fair warning, you're on your own.
+ Revolutions - more history. This one about the English civil wars. Again... apparently I like history. Make it interesting, though.
+ The Monti - another real life story telling podcast!!
+ The Story Collider - more story telling, but these are related to science.
+ The History of Rome - from the Revolutions guy. I've only listened to one so far, but I'm hooked.
+ Speaking of Science - I've only listened to one so far. Interesting.
+ Nerdist - I try this one every so often. Sometimes they are a bit too rambly for me.
+ Snap Judgement - I just started listening to this one this week. It's kind of like Radio Lab, I think. For some reason I knew about it before but didn't try it. I think I had a different expectation. But it's good!
There ya go. Get to listening.
