heat wave... to the beach

We've been having quite a heat wave recently. It's been in the low 90s. And around here, we usually think we dying of heat when it gets to about 75. For some reason, yesterday I decided to walk to the beach with Jonas. I was going to take the bike (and trailer) but Jonas doesn't like it so much (because he knows he falls asleep). So I walked. 40 minutes there. And back. In some rather hot weather... hot for anyone, not just me. The beach was nice in the morning. We were there about an hour. Jonas just wanted to climb on the "crab rocks" -- the rocks that for the jetty on either side of the harbor. I couldn't do it with no shoes and with my wrist in a brace. I'm just not sure he's quite ready, either. I think he needs another 6 months of balance work. Then we came home and he took a nap while I recovered from the walk. After we picked up Gareth we went to another beach... Davenport Landing Beach. I'd never been, but another friend was going. It's about a 10 minute drive up the coast. It was a good choice. It was bout 10 degrees cooler. Normally that's not necessarily a good thing. That means when it's a comfortable 73 in Santa Cruz, it's only 63 up there. But when it's 93 in SC (like yesterday), 83 feels pretty good. I was also worried about the wind, since I know Davenport can be quite windy. But it was just a light breeze. Really... it was just about near perfect. We met up with my friend Susan and her kids, Harry and Annie, and some of their friends. Small world that it is, we knew one of her friends from Gareth's swimming. They had a grand old time we were there just over two hours. We saw a couple of whale off the coast. Very cool. Today is supposed to be about 5 degrees cooler... better, but still hot. To see all the pics, including the skipping rocks Gareth found, and a slight glimpse of the whale, check them out here: http://www.humzoo.com/girlcarew/photos/20/1/

It sounds like a great day...except for the walking 40 minutes in the heat part. The kelp is interesting. It must be fun to live so close to the beach.
