say it with me, "No."
So, I have made a card for each of Gareth's 6 teachers. I want to write something special in each card since he is moving on and since they have been so wonderful to/for him. But, I wasn't sure what to do about a financial gift. Another mom called me today, and then we talked with a third mom at the park. I said I thought it was great if they wanted to organize a (financial) gift from all the graduates, but I could not be involved in coordination. I am barely holding it together as it is. I cannot take on anymore responsibilities. I did say I would talk to one other family (their little girl and Gareth are bestest friends). But that was my limit. I was so so proud of myself for saying it: No. Veronica (one of the other moms) even commented on how impressed she was that I was able to say no. She may have been annoyed, but I took it as a compliment (and thus heard no hint of annoyance or sarcasm in her voice).

1) Good For You! It's a great idea, but not if you have to do all the work. Learning to say NO and mean it is very liberating! Congratulations on finding that voice!
2) It has taken me a long time to say "no". I am still not very good at it with some people but it is really important to help you keep a balance in your life.
3) Saying "No." comes with age, I think. Gradually, we figure out that we cannot do it all + MORE and must set boundaries for ourselves to maintain sanity. And really, who cares if anyone else gets annoyed? I'm sure their day will come. Good for you!
4) Of course when we are very young we can say "no" easily too. Personally, I've never had a problem with the word. :-)
5) GC, great job! That's still one of those things I haven't mastered (unless my husband is asking me to clean the bathtub, then amazingly, I find my NO-voice).
6) After years of being on committees, boards, task forces, etc. I have earned the right to say NO! I paid my dues and I am done unless someone wants me to be a taster at the next Chocolate Expo... then it's a definate yes.
