otters and harbor seals
Sunday evening we drove down to Moss Landing to have dinner at Phil's Fish Market with my parents and Isaiah's parents... a father's day dinner. Moss Landing is roughly half way between Monterey and Santa Cruz along the Monterey Bay and right next to Elhorn Slough. Elkhorn Slough "(pronounced "slew") harbors the largest tract of tidal salt marsh in California outside of San Francisco Bay. This ecological treasure at the center of the Monterey Bay coastline provides much-needed habitat for hundreds of species of plants and animals, including more than 340 species of birds."
My dad mentioned that just around the corner from where were eating he had, on occasion, seen quite a grouping of otters. So, we thought it would be neat for the kids to see, even though bedtime was fast approaching. And what a treat it was. There had to have been at least 20 otters, if not more. Many looked like they were ready to drift off to sleep for the night, a couple were feeding, and a few were playing around (we assume).
Just down the road we also saw a good number of harbor seals, young and old. They too looked like they were getting ready for their evening. We didn't mean to, but I think we disturbed them a bit. But they had settled by the time we left (and we didn't get any closer than the lookout provided for).
I have pictures, but I am still getting iPhoto back on my computer after my recent cleaning up. So they will come in a day or two.

1) On my one trip to Cailfornia, Monterrey Bay and the aquarium was my favorite part. Look forward to seeing your photos.
2) Yes, the aquarium there is fabulous! I used to live in the Bay Area many, many years ago in Pittsburg.
3) I love Monterey!
4) I can't wait to see the otter pictures. The kids must have loved it.
