July 6th...

One year ago, I welcomed my beautiful daughter, Susannah Gwendolyn, into the world with Bill (Pastafarian) by my side. That pregnancy was considered high risk during the last several months and to make matters worse, I was bombarded with not just one personal tragedy during that time, but two. But stress and worry aside, Gwen came into our family as a radiant light of pure joy...

Galvin was ecstatic about his new little sister...

...and so was my mother, especially since Gwendolyn was named after her mother.

Over the following weeks, we not only enjoyed our sweet little dolly, but had to continue to help my sister cope with the devastation of a daughter with cancer and a son fighting to regain himself. One way was to attend a benefit held for them by multitudes of friends and family; Gwendolyn slept through the entire thing...

Days and nights of 'round the clock nursing continued, but Gwendolyn did sleep once in awhile, which gave us some peaceful "Kodak Moments" --

However by Autumn, Gwen wanted to stay awake even longer to interact and play, not only with The Momma and Galvin, but also Daddy...

...and she had him twisted right around her little finger, too! (He can't resist that pout!!)

As we faced another cold Illinois winter, we looked forward to spending more and more time with our Gwennie and her big brother Galvin. The love we have for our children amazes us, as does the rate that they grow and by the holidays, we couldn't believe how much - Gwen was rolling from front to back, eating solids, laughing and babbling. It was a fun Christmas!

Early 2008 brought more and more milestones for Gwendolyn, like sitting up, finger foods and the dreaded teething - this is one of the more painful aspects of early childhood that The Momma could do without. At times, I wished my babies would have been born with those things!! Especially when they look like this--poor baby...

The older Gwen got, the more her personality began to shine...

She also wanted to help around the house more, and as The Momma, I cannot deny a child's wish to clean and organize! Gwendolyn decided to start with recycling.

Then, she moved on to dishes...

Soon the days got warmer, Gwen started cruising furniture and saying "words" that we could understand: Da-Da, Momma, G (for Galvin), Gog and Itty (kitty). She wanted to climb stairs, crawl until her knees bled or walk assisted...

...and she'd like nothing better than to be outside, pulling up clover or playing with her brother, Daddy and me. And Gwendolyn, my love, we'd like nothing more than to be anywhere with you! You are my lover girl, my dolly, and my sweet girlie-girl, and I'm so thankful that God entrusted your soul to me and your Daddy. I promise that we'll love you and hug you and take very good care of you as long as we can - Happy Birthday, my sweet!!

Love,
The Momma
