Saturday, January 17th, 2009Saturday Evening Entertainment So, I was shopping at JoAnn's Fabric this evening. A store near my house is closing, and all of the fabric is 70% off. Anyway, while I was checking out the fabric, a little boy probably 6 or 7 ran into me with their cart. The kid was a total stinker, so it was probably intentional. The mother of the child told me she was sorry, but in Spanish. I told her no problem in Spanish as well.
As she was telling me she was sorry, I was thinking that her Spanish just didn't sound right. (Nor did she look the least bit hispanic.) I have a degree in Spanish & Elementary Education, so I'm certified to also teach Spanish. I had friends from Spain in college, and when I lived in Chicago, I worked at a restaurant where all of the kitchen staff was from Mexico.
The lady and her son made their way to the fabric cutting section as did I at the same time. She started speaking English to the person cutting the fabric. She had absolutely no accent at all in English.
Then, we also were in line to check out at the same time. She started speaking Spanish to the kid again who clearly had no idea what she was saying. The kid was looking at glue sticks and said they were $6.00 in English. In Spanish, the mother said, no, 30. So, the customer in line behind her started talking to the little boy. She said, those are 10 cents and then showed him the sign.
At that point, I totally wanted to bust out laughing. So, here is this lady randomly speaking Spanish for some unknown reason, and she didn't even know how to say 10.
I left the store totally cracking up. I sort of wish I would have asked the lady what sort of experiment she was performing!
I'll try and answer your questions. I realized last night that I can just respond on my own blog. lol.
