I love to Camp

This weekend Joe and I decided to go camping with some friends of ours, Garrett and Kris. Joe and Garrett went to high school together and Garrett and Kris have been together longer then Joe and I have. They usually come over every Saturday night to hang out, so we decided it was about time we went camping this season.
We love to go to Lake Sangchris to camp. It is close to us, there is good fishing and a great primitive camping section. I drove down, as soon as I got off work on friday to see if I could secure a spot, since there are only 5 campsites in the primitive area. Since it had been raining all day I figured there would be some open. When I got down there, one spot was left open. The ground was not soaked and it all in all seamed pretty dry. So I set up our tent, and waited for the camp manager to come around so I could official claim and pay for the spot.

2 hours later, Joe arrived. He was in charge of the food and firewood. I had been texting him all afternoon, reminding him to bring certain items. Once he showed up, we could get a fire started. A little while later, Garrett and Kris arrived and we could get the evening started.

The next morning we awoke to a very nice day. The clouds were light and fluffy, barely any wind, and the temperature was cool. We had breakfast, which I made. It is a camping staple from when I was a kid. Spam and potatoes. The best camp food ever. Just cube some spam and take a bag of southern style hashbrowns, and throw it on the skillet. Little salt and pepper, and you have one darn tasty breakfast.

After breakfast, Kris and I drove to Pawnee to pick up a few essentials we had forgotten and then headed back. We then went on a hike with Joe for over an hour. We all thought we would be lost in the woods forever, but Joe somehow always new the path would lead us back to the campground. It was a beautiful walk.

We relaxed for the rest of the day, with the boys going on a couple of walks here and there. We made dinner, which Kris and I picked up in town, Pulled pork, and country style baker beans. Pulled pork in the skillet, and beans cooked in the can. With a great dinner in our stomachs, we stayed up for a while, but packed it in relatively early, around midnight.

The next morning as we were cooking more Spam and potatoes, we noticed the sky was getting darker and the wind was picking up. I had already started packing up our stuff, so we decided to pack it all, in case it started to rain. We finished breakfast and most of the stuff was in the car, when I looked up in the sky just west of us. I said "I give us 10 mins before it starts raining hard." We threw the rest of our stuff in cars, put out in fire and were getting into the vehicles as the rain hit. Perfect timing.

It was a great weekend where we could just sit back and relax with some good friends. First camping of 2008: awesome. Check out the photos I took while on the trip: www.humzoo.com/k8day/photos/11/

1) I haven't had SPAM in ages. When I was a poor college student we used to bake it with brown sugar and pineapple-I know its loaded with sodium but I loved it!

2) That sounds like such an awesome camp adventure. I can't wait to get my boys out for their first camp of the year (in June).

3) What a fun adventure! I'm not sure about the spam meal though. I'll take your word for it. Glad you had such a great time.
