A lot of hype?

Joe and I DVRed the Olympics tonight because we went to Decatur to cheer for Dave. I knew the US men's relay team had to swim their race, the last race for Michael Phelps. I have heard a lot of different opinions this week on Phelps. Some are rooting for him and some are sick of hearing about him. I am definitely rooting for him. Something that has never been done in the previous 100+ years of the modern Olympics is a momentous feat. A single athlete winning 8 gold medals in one Olympic games. That is something that is bound to get a lot of press. That is something that deserves the spotlight. World history is being made. Some may get sick of hearing about him, but I say Congratulations to Michael Phelps.

2) He has totally made the olympics more exciting than ever. Now that his events are done, I don't have much interest. But it has been awesome watching him. How about that race Friday night (or maybe Thursday?) where he won by .01 seconds! That was totally awesome.

3) It's true, his public persona is very kind and humble. He has a boyish charm about him and really seems just grateful to be there.

4) I enjoyed watching him race. It was fascinating to see how "dolphin-like" his movements are.

6) Hey you guys wanna come over and bring guitar hero? Ethan and Courtney are asleep, so we'd have to play it on mute or something. But I'm wide awake. Ok thanks bye. Oh and I'll be sitting out in front in my jammies waiting for you. Kbye.

7) Definitely not hype. To swim that much in the space of a week and cane everyone is astounding.

8) Not to take anything away from MP, but technology has also helped him along. True, he is the fastest swimmer in the world right now, but you can't really compare him to swimmers who competed before the high tech pools and swimsuits. We can high tech sports until people are molecularly transporting themselves through time..........that could happen. I'd like these guys to race the English Channel and see the results. To me, that would be more newsworthy than the controlled environment of the Pool built especially for making and breaking records.

9) I dunno, I still think it's pretty amazing. he swam a lot this week under huge pressure and he still beat everyone. And he gave his flowers to his mom, which makes him a Superstar in my book.

10) I don't think anyone wants to take anything away from Michael but considering technology--you have to argue that he has some advantages over the swimmers whose records he broke. Then, on the other side, he has a lot more pressure and media than the swimmers of old and that has to affect performance and mental state. I say well done to him!! He's made a name for himself and I hope he keeps being his sweet self to mom and everyone else. It has to be hard to keep yourself whole during all the press frenzy and (we are sure) courting by advertisers and other agencies for your name, your body, your face, your legacy.
