I finally remembered to research mallard ducks to see the length of nesting time, etc.

Fascinating stuff because so many things I'd been told about mallards seems to be incorrect.

1) They mate for life

Apparently not. They choose their mate in the fall and breed in the spring.

2) Ducks do not eat fish

Apparently they do--small ones. And frogs, tadpoles, snails, etc.

3) Both take care of the nest and young.

Apparently the males abandon the females after 10 days and molt all their feathers and can't fly for quite some time after the breeding season. I think it was up to 30 days.

Guess I won't see Gaylord and Magnolia again...at least I may not until next spring!

Interesting. I have heard that Canada geese mate for life, true or not I don't know.

I'm pretty sure you are right about the Canada geese--but I guess I'd better check my facts on that too! :)
