1) I thought it rained there all the time. The Department of Tourism needs to hire you. You have made me want to visit Portland some day. I've always wanted to see Washington State too. Friends of ours retired in the San Juan Islands.
2) John, the guy who used to cut my hair, moved his family up to the San Juan Islands about a year ago. They had vacationed there for years. Hopefully it is all they wanted it to be--it certainly sounds like a great place to live if you can afford it.
Portland likes to perpetuate the myth about the rain--just to keep people from overrunning the place and loving it as much as we do. :) In fact, Portland can average less rainfall a year than some other US cities. The rain can be similar to a heat wave in Charlotte or a snowy spell in the Twin Cities in MN. The main month we don't get rain is August--rarely rains during that month and it gets very dry and brown. We start looking more like CA than OR until the rains blessedly return.
