I imagine they get lots of shelter from the mountains.

Actually the bad weather comes from the ocean, not the land. We get protection from the elements in Portland from the mountains. Probably from tsunamis too. :)

That would be the Cascades and the Rockies. They block the rain from going to Eastern Oregon. It's more high-desert whereas the Coastal Range is smaller and limits some of the rain and cooler weather coming over to the Willamette Valley where Portland is but the folks right on the ocean like these get it all--full bore.
